July 13 2008 -- The latest research about SA's most feared crime shows that eight out of every ten armed robberies carried out against families are meticulously researched, with these feral gangsters obtaining detailed information from 'insiders' -- housekeepers, gardeners and other people who know these families' habits, know exactly how much bling they own and how much it's worth.
Not explained in this research however, is why so many families are attacked where nothing at all is stolen, but the family patriach is usually shot dead in cold blood...
40 families a day are now attacked by armed gangs countrywide in South Africa, during which at least 10 women are raped and 12 of the male householders are murdered or assaulted and tortured so viciously that they require long periods of expensive hospitalisation.
These feral gangsters are utterly ruthless and do not hesitate to kill at the drop of a hat. They also habitually use excessive force to subdue their victims and show no mercy or compassion towards them whatsoever. This crime has increased by 13,5% this past year alone -- to nearly 15,000 attacks a year -- of which half are carried out in Gauteng.

These were the findings by Dr Rudolph Zinn of Unisa's department of forensic- and crime investigations, who drew up detailed profiles of the modus-operandi of these armed attack gangs after questioning thirty such imprisoned gangsters. He found that their advance planning always is meticulous: they often walk around the targeted family's properties nights before the attack to test their security systems, for instance. Zinn said these criminals are among the most violent and feral he had ever encountered and when he was talking to them, 'his hair stood on end'.
Zinn has also determined while speaking to them that the very best way to detect intruders while they enter your property stealthily is a tiny dog inside the house - these little yappers also are very nervous and thus the most alert to even the smallest unusual sounds.
Zinn 's research is being submitted to the head of the SA police's crime-analysis and -statistics department, Dr Chris de Kock. Zinn claims that these attackers also told him that 'race did not play a part' in their modus-operandii: they would attack any house with loot in it. The police wants to compare this with their own findings.
The researcher said that while speaking to these convicts, 'they made my hair stand up. They show absolutely no remorse nor sympathy for their victims, they have no respect for the victim and human dignity.' He claims that they will attack any family of whatever race -- as long as they have bling and the money. "They are so greedy that nothing will stop them'.
The profile he drew up was that the average armed-attacker of SA family homes is an unemployed young black male between 19 and 26. They see the organised attacking and robbing of 'rich' families as their jobs. They often target houses of unusual architecture, believing people living there generally are richer. They will always use extreme violence and vile language to intimidate their victims into submission - and do not hesitate even for one second to kill their victims if they feel like it.
Victims usually are viciously tortured 'to make sure they aren't hiding any valuables, and one out of every five female victims also suffer rape.' The high level of violence also is totally unnecessary, and is much worse than ever needed in any situation to intimidate their unarmed victims.
Zinn finds that these armed attacks targetting families are almost never 'opportunistic'. The gangs are centrally organised, are large in size and their advance planning is meticulous: homes are watched for days before, and in the case of farm attacks, the surveillance time can be as long as two weeks before they drive there to attack the homestead.
They always know in advance which homes contain valuables and in which quantities.
In eighty percent of these attacks, Zinn has found that the armed gangs obtain advance information from employees, former employees, friends or clients of the target families.
They are not deterred by home-alarm systems or emergency reaction units - they simply adjust their working methods by attacking before residents can activate their alarms, or wait to ambush them at the gates as they arrive back from work or shopping.
Why do they do it? Because it pays much better to rob families than it does other 'resources'. The average value looted at each armed robbery is R5,000 cash plus the 'durable goods' they carry off. ASnd they don't need any education for this job, either. Just ferocity.
And what do they spend it on? Expensive clothes and shoes, parties and women. No need for investment bankers here then... Zinn didn't say where they sold their looted goods.
