Tiny pupils whipped by teacher with fanbelt

South African teacher arrested after allegedly whipping seven local farm children

Bultfontein, Free State, South Africa. – Seven very young primary-school pupils were allegedly ordered held by their hands and feet by older children -- and then whipped repeatedly with a fanbelt by their teacher.

And after they were whipped, the injured farm children were forced to incite the Our Father prayer in the teacher's Tswana language while packing up their satchels for their trip back home. They all live on the same farm. The shocking story was reported this week by the Afrikaans news daily Beeld - and the children willingly posed for pictures to show exactly how they had been abused by their teacher. The children's ages range from 7 to 12. The children and parents were interviewed after lodging charges at the local police station and thus forcing the teacher's arrest.

Mrs Dikeledi Moshe, 49, the teacher who is being charged with this horrendous crime, was arrested and charged in the Bulfontein magistrate's court on Thursday September 4. The woman has not yet been asked to plead to the charges of child-abuse she is being investigated for and was granted bail of a mere R1,000. She has to appear in court again on 22 September.

The seven small pupils all live on the farm Meerlandsvlei near Dealesville in the Free State, where their parents work as farm-labourers. Primary School Rankunyane, a former farm school now being run by the ANC-government, has only 25 pupils and two classrooms, and only one teacher - Mrs Moshe. It's not known at this stage whether she's going back to the same job while the court case is pending.

One of the parents of the whipped pupils, Mrs Elisa Maditjane, said her ten-year-old son had arrived home in a state of deep shock after the beating on Tuesday. His little body is covered in deep welts.
  • The mom was in tears while relating the story -- and the relatives of seven children have now lodged charges against the teacher as the story started to emerge when the children arrived at their farm-homes.

The children told the newspaper that the one classroom had become rowdy and chatty while the teacher was in the adjacent classroom. She had become angered and started yelling at them from the adjacent classroom that 'you aren't learning'. She then entered the classroom with the fanbelt and ordered one child to stand next to her.

He tried to get away but Moshe then ordered four of the larger children to catch the little boy and hold him up in the air, suspended by his hands and feet.

The children showed the Beeld newspaper photographer how they were then picked up one after the other and whipped repeatedly by the teacher.

  • Some were whipped as frequently as ten times each. Two girls and five boys, aged between seven to 12 years, were beaten this way.

Farm owner Hannes Linde was shocked and very angry after seeing the deep welts which the fan belt had laid into the children's tiny backs.

"Teachers are supposed to provide guidance in these times when there's so much school-violence, but now the teachers are also assaulting the children,' he said.
