Three white men executed, two injured in racist attack in SA

Five SA-Indian men - including 2 local cops - given bail after gunning down five white men in cold blood

September 12 2008 DURBAN/Umbilo , South Africa. On Wednesday night, five unarmed white SA men were gunned down execution-style in an Umbilo, Durban pub/restaurant - three men, Nick Janse van Rensburg, 57, Shawn Strydom, 33, and Rory Menzies, 40, died on the scene and two others, Shawn and Bruce Edwards, were injured. http://www.telegraaf.nl/buitenland/1908289/__Drie_doden_door_ruzie_over_penis__.html
For previous genocidal attacks by local Indians/muslims against SA whites, also see:

A police source said the two groups of men had been inside the tavern watching the World Cup 2010 FIFA-football qualifying game between England and Croatia last night. "At some stage, one man from each group went into the tavern's toilets and there was an argument over the size of their penises." Pictured: one of the murdered men, Shawn Strydom

The crime scene was described by the restaurant's security guards as a 'gruesome slaughterhouse' and the patrons of the pub and the adjacent restaurants have been left deeply traumatised and needed trauma-treatment after the massacre.

However only two days later -- after gunning down the five white men in cold blood in what was clearly a premeditated, racist attack against unarmed white men (the Indians had gone home to fetch their guns), the five Indian men have been granted bail in the Durban magistrate's court. They have to return to court in November.See: http://groups.msn.com/crimebustersofsouthafrica/murders.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=5412

  • The two Indian police officers Samuel Steven, 39, stationed at Mayville police station, and his brother Leon Steven, 33, stationed at Durban Central, were released on a mere R5,000 bail each. The officers were represented by their attorney Zane Haneef and in their affidavit said they were involved in solving a number of high-profile drug cases. If they were denied bail and placed in Westville prison it would be dangerous as they would be in with the "very criminals they arrested".

  • Their affidavits also stated that Samuel had been a police officer for 20 years and Leon for 15 years, and they "were committed to fighting crime".

The other three Indians, Nithanandan Ganess, 37, a marine engineer at Transnet, Julian Naidoo, 31, an operations supervisor from Phoenix, and Naeem Sadick, 22, a security consultant from Berea, were released on a mere R3,000 bail each. While Haneef also represented Sadick, attorney Asif Latif represented Ganess and Naidoo and read out their affidavits describing them as "holding responsible jobs and not being in possession of any firearms on the night in question".

  • All five men pleaded not guilty of premeditated murder before magistrate Thandi Nomvungu. They claimed that the white men had allegedly made 'racist remarks'. ( Comment: Apparently they felt that this insult had entitled them to go and fetch their guns and shoot the unarmed white men down amidst a large crowd of pub-patrons.)

There have been other reports claiming the exact opposite to their claims in court however, with many eye-witnesses including a lawyer who witnessed the shootings, telling the news media how the unarmed white men were gunned down after they'd become embroiled in an angry exchange with the arrested Indians -- and that both sides had then started hurling racist insults and exchanging blows in a brawl outside, most of the witnesses have told the news media.

The Indian men had left the scene after the mutually-insulting race-brawl and all five Indians had then returned shortly thereafter to the bar-restaurant with guns and simply shot the unarmed white men down, execution-style. They were rushed out of the magistrate's court on Friday, shielded by their families from photographers.

Murdered family man Menzies leaves four orphaned children: Journalist Kamini Padayachee of the Natal Mercury newspaper Kamini.padayachee@inl.co.za interviewed relatives of one of three men killed in a shooting at the Umbilo restaurant/pub on Wednesday night. He quoted Deon Arbuckle, Menzies' brother-in-law as saying that 'the family was upset and wanted the bar closed down. Arbuckle: "I always hear about fights breaking out at that place and now this has happened. "We want that place to be closed down because they should have had bouncers at the bar or some sort of security. "Firearms and alcohol are always going to be a bad combination." He also said Menzies's four children now were left orphaned. The children, aged from 13 to 21 years, were devastated by his death. "The children lost their mother to illness a short while ago and now they are orphans. They are all very traumatised."

Arbuckle said that Menzies, of Berea, who ran the Durban branch of a foodwaste disposal company, was a dedicated family man. "He was very family oriented, level-headed and he lived life to the full. He had just moved back to Durban from Johannesburg a few months ago. "It is really sad."

Slaughterhouse: Enforce Security company spokeswoman Brendi Baard said security guards who had attended to the scene had described it as a slaughterhouse. "We had to calm people down and ask them to clear the scene. It was very gruesome."

Alan Gale -- employed at the Coimbra Restaurant next door to the pub -- went to look for a friend next door and found himself in the line of fire."When I heard the first gunshot I thought it was a cracker. I looked straight at a man pointing a gun. At the second shot, I hit the floor. Around seven shots were fired. People were screaming and diving on to the floor all around me. I saw a wounded man with blood flowing from his side. He was pleading for help and then passed away in front of me."

When the shooting stopped, a group of men split up and some drove off in a blue Toyota Tazz without number plates. The rest drove away in a white BMW. The security guard on duty managed to get the number plate and reported it to the police."

A musician at the Coimbra also related his version of events on condition of anonymity. "The shots were so loud they sounded like they were being fired in the restaurant. I rushed outside and saw three guys leaving the bar. A big guy was holstering a gun. "They got into a white BMW and screamed off. A man ran out of the bar after the car, bleeding from a wound in his groin, and then he collapsed. "

  • Inside the bar one man was dead from a head shot. Two were alive and moaning and one of their friends was throwing chairs around and screaming."

  • According to the musician, restaurant-staff members tried their best to stem the bleeding from the injured men's wounds, and comforted patrons. Security and medical personnel arrived rapidly, followed by the police.

Meanwhile the Asian community has closed ranks, telling the Natal Mercury on Sept 12 2008 that the White men 'had called the Indian men coolies' and that the white men had confronted the Indians while the Indians had behaved perfectly throughout this verbal assault. However restaurant patrons also told the news media that they had seen one of the Indian men follow a White man into the toilet before the entire fracas broke out, the Indian men left, came back with guns and shot down five unarmed white men.

Why did suspended cops keep their guns?

  • Spokesman Inspector Michael Read said that both of the Indian officers were already on suspension over another matter at the time. Read did not explain why, since they were suspended from official duty, they had still been allowed to keep their guns at home.

The South African Press Association and the Afrikaans newspaper Beeld have reported the incident in a very understated manner -- while the English-language news media in South Africa has thus far provided merely a brief, sanitised version of events - except the Natal Mercury, which has a large Indian readership and has already started publishing claims that the White men had insulted the Indian men. Radio 702 has broadcast the story by describing it as a 'cultural argument over penis size'.

Beeld newspaper reports that when Netcare 911 paramedics showed up at the restaurant/bar after the shootings, one victim was already dead. Paramedic Chris Botha of Netcare 911 said they did their very best to save the lives of the others but that two more men had died shortly after their arrival.

The SAPA report also cited a police officer said that "vulgar and and racist remarks were made by both groups of men for a while before they ended their verbal row.

SA CENSORSHIP WHEN WHITES ARE MURDERED: The English-language news media has thus far worked hard to downplay or even trivialise this dreadful incident - with the English-language Radio 702 describing the massacre as a 'cultural argument over penis size' and one newspaper joking 'does size matter?' when reporting about the cold-blooded murders of three family men. http://www.news24.com/Beeld/Suid-Afrika/0,,3-975_2392159,00.html

'WHITES ARE THE ONLY RACISTS'

RacistTShirts Rugby racism: - What does however feature prominently on every single one of these newspapers front pages today, is the so-called ' rugby racism 'story. This deals with a statement from a black woman, Mrs Ziningi Shibambo, who said she had endured sexist-racist abuse during the Vodacom Tri-Nations Rugby Test between South Africa and Australia at Coca-Cola Park on August 30 from three men. This unconfirmed, unverified incident enjoys wall to wall media coverage, and has been for the past two weeks. http://www.sarugby.net/default.asp?des=article&id=269862

Now the SA rugby club players have been ordered to start wearing t-shirts with the slogan; "say No to racism', and the first clubs wearing them played at the SAA National Club Champs in Stellenbosch last night. They aren't allowed to refuse.

Five SA-Indian men - including two local police officers -- were arrested in Phoenix by a special police task-force after racist shooting. The suspects were given very low bail conditions within 24 hours. Their trial starts on November 13 at the Durban Magistrate's court.

On Wednesday night, five unarmed white SA men were gunned down execution-style in an Umbilo, Durban pub/restaurant - three men, Nick Janse van Rensburg, 57, Shawn Strydom, 33 pictured left, and Rory Menzies, 40, died on the scene and two others, Shawn and Bruce Edwards, were injured.

The crime scene was described by the restaurant's security guards as a 'gruesome slaughterhouse' and the patrons of the pub and the adjacent restaurants have been left deeply traumatised and needed trauma-treatment after the massacre. Umbilo is a primarily 'white-' dominated suburb in KwaZulu-Natal.

Five South African-Indian men were arrested shortly afterwards by a special police task-force in the Indian suburb of Phoenix for carrying out the racist massacre. Some of their relatives that the Indian men had first been provoked by the whites after one Indian had 'joked about their penis size'. However other eye-witnesses account how the white men were gunned down after they'd become angered by an Indian man's race-insulting comments about a White man's penis size -- and that both sides had started hurling racist insults and exchanging blows, most of the witnesses have told the news media.

Two of the arrested men, all South Africans of Indian descent, were suspended police officers who were being investigated for a previous matter not related to this shooting.

The horror unfolded Wednesday-evening at the Queensmead Shopping Centre pub-restaurant in Umbilo.

Three of the white South African men died on the scene -- Nick Janse Van Rensburg (57), Shawn Strydom (33) and Rory Menzies (40), all Afrikaners. The two other victims, Shawn Edwards (30) and Bruce Edwards (55) were critically wounded and rushed to hospital.

Police Supt. Muzi Mngomezulu confirmed the incident - but said the underlying reason for the shootings was still being investigated. He also would not confirm statements from onlookers and witnesses at the scene -- made to the news media -- that the Afrikaner and Indian men had been embroiled in a verbal, viciously racist row concerning penis sizes before the shootings and there had even been some fist-fights. He did confirm that the police had hurriedly formed a special task force and had arrested five men from the Phoenix area, and that two of the arrested men were police officers.

  • Police are still investigating -- examining camera-surveillance videos from the area and interviewing the numerous witnesses at the shopping centre shooting-scene.
Beeld newspaper reports that when Netcare 911 paramedics showed up at the restaurant/bar after the shootings, one victim was already dead. Paramedic Chris Botha of Netcare 911 said they did their very best to save the lives of the others but that two more men had died shortly after their arrival.

The SAPA report also cited a police officer as confirming the incident - although the police officer was afraid to have his name published. Vulgar and racist remarks were made by both groups of men for a while before they ended their verbal row, the policeman said. The Afrikaans news media has merely reported the SAPA report.
