Copulating Couple Culled on railtracks by train
Distraught South African train-driver hit the copulators at 23:30 Friday-night...
Sep 21 2008 KINROSS, South Africa. An unknown couple were hit and killed by a train on Friday-evening at around 23:30 near the small gold-mining town of Kinross in South Africa. They were killed while engaged in the sex-act on the railway tracks, said the driver.
Police were investigating whether the woman had been 'a willing partner' or whether she was being raped. South Africa has the highest reported rape-rates* in the world, so this would not be so surprising.
Quoted was police superintendent Abie Khoabane of the Mpumalanga police, who also said that they didn't know the identities of the couple. They had no identification-documents nor any property to identify them with them at all, he said. Also, there were no homes nor vehicles nearby. The nearest settlement to the accident was the gold-mining town of Kinross (pop. 10,000+) -- 65 miles from Johannesburg.
The distraught train-driver said he was unable to stop the train in time - he'd spotted them on the tracks just before the train hit them and was only able to bring the heavy train to a complete stop a while later.
Police said that when he walked back to investigate, and came across the dead couple he immediately notified local police.
Economy of Kinross:
Kinross was established as an agricultural-service centre. It forms a linear stretch along the N17 and the railway line to the south of the town and is directly linked to the industrial regions of Secunda and SASOL, the South African state-owned fuel-from-coal plants. The town is largely reliant on SASOL for employment. The surrounding power stations and commercial farming activities also provide employment. Together with Thistle Grove, Kinross has a population of about 10,750 people. This mining region became infamous worldwide because of the worst gold-mine disaster in SA history in 1986, when a massive fire had killed 177 mineworkers and injured 235 from poisoned smoke caused by plastic insulation material.

Singer Katie Melua in high-crime Port Elizabeth
Local crime-fighters warn of 35% increase in housebreakings, armed-robberies in middleclass-areasReport update on Oct 14 2008: Two men were arrested while trying to kidnap for ransom a wealthy 9-year-old child of Summerstrand at her primary school in Port Elizabeth Central... http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/News/0,,2-7-1442_2409308,00.html
Sept 21 2008 -- dspies@johnnicec.co.za -- With millions of people unable to afford a daily meal any more, many areas of South Africa now show a dramatic increase in housebreakings and armed-robberies of families, local crime-fighters and security companies are warning.
Singer Katie Melua in PE Sept 22: picture: The stunning Georgian-born romantic singer/songwriter Katie Melua is touring South Africa for a second time from the UK -- and held a one-night performance in the Port Elizabeth concert hallon Sept 22 -- the Vodacom NMMU Indoor Centre located in upperclass-Summerstrand. This is located in a region with an annual recorded 97 murders up to March 2008, where family homes were attacked by armed robber-gangs 51 times and there were 346 armed robberies of citizens. And local security companies warn that this year, there has been an increase of at least 35% in violence-driven crimes in this region.
Port Elizabeth's security companies this week all rang the alarm bells, warning in the local news media that many residential and business areas in the entire Nelson Mandela Bay region now are under virtual siege from increasingly violent criminals -- with for instance,a 35% increase in housebreakings and armed robberies of families inside their homes being reported since the beginning of the year.
Security companies warn that this increase among their client-base is moreover only the tip of the iceberg....many burglaries and armed attacks go unreported because many residents have lost faith in the police's ability to protect them.
Two security companies alone -- Atlas and Chubbs -- collectively reported more than 330 such cases among their middleclass-client base since January. They are deeply concerned - some middleclass, 'wealthier' areas had shown an incident increase of up to 35 per cent compared with last year, they said.
KING WILLIAM'S TOWN ALSO UNDER SIEGE
And seperate reports from other regions of the Eastern Cape, including the tiny town of King Williams town located right next to the capital city of Bhisho -- one of the poorest regions in the country -- also show middleclass-families and businesses having to live under similar siege-conditions.

Port Elizabeth police inspector and spokeswoman Hazel Mqala however has refused to provide the latest crime statistics, citing the long-standing censorship-order from Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula.
Another high-placed police source said there has been a 'significant increase' over the past few months of break-ins and armed attacks. “Every day we attend to more and more housebreaking cases,” he said.
LORRAINE suburb in Walmer region: 30 breakins this month:
Security companies said they could see this increase from their individual client bases in the middle-class areas of the Bay. Atlas and Chubb Security collectively reported more than 330 cases in Port Elizabeth since January 1.And the primarily white suburb of Lorraine is reportedly one of the worst affected suburbs. Local ward councillor Gustav Rautenbach said at least 30 break-ins had been reported to him in the last month alone.
'We cannot rely on the police': Lorraine town councillor:
He said he had taken the matter up with officers at the Walmer police station, which is responsible for patrolling Lorraine, and had expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of a police presence in the area.
- “I‘m calling on the community to get involved, because the police simply cannot protect and serve us anymore. “We cannot rely on the police for proper service, let alone to provide a safe and secure environment for us.” Rautenbach said he had requested the police to assign an officer to patrol the streets of Lorraine, along with about 20 volunteers.
'Not enough cops to respond to all the emergencies,' New Brighton cop:
Another police officer said the townships of KwaZakhele and New Brighton also were targetted - and they just didn't have enough cops to respond to all the calls. “What makes matters worse is that there is no manpower. We might get a call while the robbery is taking place but we cannot respond.”
Bethelsdorp's northern areas targetted:
A Bethelsdorp police officer said its Northern Areas had the highest number of house break-ins in the region. Atlas security operations manager Monty Montgomery said his firm had already responded 84 armed robberies, 10 of these were inside family homes during which the families were terrorised and attacked. There also were more than 200 break-ins among their client-base alone this year, with Lorraine, Sunridge Park, Fern Glen, and Walmer being hotspots.
- “Atlas also responded to 84 armed robberies, which included at least 10 house robberies in the last two weeks, where domestic workers were overpowered and tied up while the robbers ransacked the houses,” he said.
Criminals break through the roofs, disable alarm systems:
Montgomery said Atlas had three instances where criminals had broken in through the roof and disabled the alarm system before ransacking the house. These crimes pay off for the criminals: the owners had lost more than R200,000 worth of goods per burglary...
- Montgomery said even if the police had been prepared to give statistics, their data would more than likely not reflect the full extent of the problem -- as many burglaries went unreported. http://www.theherald.co.za/herald/2007/01/25/news/n01_25012007.htm
Ex-pres. Carter 'blij met vertrek Mbeki' - Carter happy Mbeki's gone
The Mbeki cabinet resignation came one day after our colleague André Bakkes reported in the Lowvelder news that hundreds of black South African primary-school children torched their temporary school in Nelspruit after they were kicked out of their nice old schools to make way for a parking lot next to the WC2010 football stadium, in an unrelated event eleven members of the Mbeki-cabinet have also resigned their jobs. The country meanwhile will have Mr Kgalema Motlanthe (58) taking over as Acting President two days from now, on Thursday, until next year's presidential elections: http://www.telegraaf.nl/buitenland/1988698/__Motlanthe_volgt_Mbeki_op__.html

MBEKI LEGACY: A CRIME-RIDDEN, DISEASED, UNDERACHIEVING COUNTRY
And his voters all live in constant fear, besieged by growing numbers of militia-style feral youth gangs which, armed with AK47s and Uzi automatic assault weapons, don't hesitate to gun down any cops who dare to oppose them with their tiny sidearms. These feral gangs carry out armed attacks against families inside their homes with impunity. .. to the tune of 40 attacks a day.
