SOWETAN -- "Having put down the novel For Whites Only only a day before my scheduled interview with author Charles Cilliers, I was beginning to feel intimidated. Here is a writer who definitely wears his heart on his sleeve. In his book he tackles the issue of racism in the white community with the finesse of a bull in a china shop.
For Cilliers there are no holy cows. He slams the Afrikaner and English with equal venom, firing off salvos that will make the average white South African cringe. Imagine my surprise then, when confronted at Sowetan’s reception area by this articulate, trendy, good-looking young man, who looks barely out of high school.“I’m surprised I’m being interviewed by a white,” he quipped. “I’m surprised you’re so damn young,” I fired back.
Cilliers is laid-back. His body language is that of a confident person, someone who is comfortable with who he is; yet equally uncomfortable with the attitudes and actions of so many whites.“Just the other day I spent some time in the Kruger National Park with family and friends and the statements made, often with subtle racial undertones, make me cringe. It’s just plain ignorance,” he says.
Like so many of his generation, Cilliers was brought up in a home heavily influenced by right-wing politics.
His early childhood was spent on a farm in Witbank where, he says, they “grew nothing in particular”.
“My father was a blacksmith in town but he wanted us to grow up with the freedom of living on a farm. It was a fun time. I was like a savage … never bathing, climbing trees.” It wasn’t too long before a young Cilliers learnt about race. “My best friend on the farm was a black boy. We would play from sunrise to sunset, but when my white friends from school came to visit, I used to tell him to lie low. So even then there was that unspoken assumption that black and white kept their distance. There was racism in me even at that early stage.”
Cilliers’ parents divorced when he was 13. While he and his father moved to Bloemfontein, his mother remained in Witbank, where she remains a concert pianist and teaches music. Cilliers soon found himself at that bastion of Afrikaner education in the Free State, Grey College.
After matric it was a short journey up the road to Free State University, where he gained three degrees: journalism, communication science and linguistics, followed by a masters degree in creative writing in Cape Town. So, when did he realise things were not right in this country?
- “My parents were both AWB members. I used to be forced to dress up in this ridiculous khaki uniform and march in the sun.
“We were taught it was a battle of good versus evil. The whites were seen as God’s chosen ones and blacks as Satan’s savages.
“But some of these AWB people would be drunk and a couple of them looked seriously in-bred. I began to question if this was really good. It was about the same time that Madiba was released from prison. - He just defied expectations and was completely dignified. This was supposed to be the anti-Christ, but just look at him… what a man. And then slowly my perceptions began to change.”
“I originally wanted a black person to write the book but as I got more involved in the research I realised a white person should write it. It was meant to get people to understand what apartheid was about but then I realised the majority of whites do not feel guilty about apartheid because they are in denial. They deny their involvement, they deny the effect it had on so many people.
“They continue to cling to as many privileges as possible. Apartheid did not die in 1994. It is still very much with us today. This denial continues.
“I wasn’t going to take the easy target which is the Afrikaans community. This would have been a pushover. I didn’t want the English-speaking liberals to hide and say ‘we’re not so bad’.” In the book Cilliers comes across as a Zuma supporter, something he does not deny.
Influenced by a former bank robber...
It was while studying at the University of Cape Town that Cilliers befriended the subject of his first book, The Choice, and someone who had a strong influence on his life, Gayton McKenzie. McKenzie, a former bank robber, is no stranger to controversy. He is mostly remembered as the whistle-blower on corruption at Grootvlei Prison in the Free State back in 2002.
- “We run a fish business together in which we bring fish up to Gauteng and then distribute as far away as Mpumalanga,” Cilliers says. “The business employs about 20 people – all ex-convicts – as we believe it is important to give people a second chance.”

US NUCLEAR ARSENAL, SCIENTISTS ARE AGING FAST, HE WARNS:
He said the American nuclear-scientific community is deteroriating, with their nuclear-scientists reaching retirement age andvery few new nuclear engineers now still capable of designing new nuclear weapons, and no experience in testing their aging arsenal either. "The last new nuclear weapon in the USA was built in 1991 and no weapons in our arsenal have been tested since 1992, he noted, adding: "At a certain point it will become impossible to extend the life of our nuclear arsenal"...
" Presently the USA is the only nuclear power in the world which is now no longer able to design any new nuclear weapons. To be blunt there is no way we can maintain a credible deterrent to maintain our nuclear stockpile without being able to test the efficacy of that stockpile...'

The 53-year-old Wilkerson was videod hiding 23,500 dollars after accepting it as a bribe. She's appearing in a law court on November 17 and risks a 20-year maximum jail sentence. A Democrat, Attorney Wilkerson belongs to the following organisations:

BACKGROUND -- THE ONGOING SOUTH AFRICAN FARM MURDERS - SA TV PROGRAMME 'A BLOODY HARVEST':
This documentary below was produced by the SA prize-winning journalist Susan Puren of Carte Blanche. Since this 2001 programme was made, another 1,800 white farmers were murdered. The death toll now stands at more than 3,000 murdered white farmers and smallholders, their family members and -workers. South Africa only has 13,500 commercial farmers left in 2008 - down from 85,000 in 1994. They occupy less than ONE PERCENT of the entire South African land surface and even under these siege-conditions, still manage to produce 10,5-million tonnes of the staple-food maize. The South African population of 47-million people consumes an minimum annual 8-million tonnes of maize but the country's most capable food-producers are being murdered and chased off their farms at a massive rate. The per-capita murder rate for the Boer farmers in South Africa is four times higher than for the rest of the population... These farm murders are hate-crimes, warns Dr Gregory Stanton, the foremost world-expert on genocide, founding member of the organisation 'Genocide Watch': "South African farmers are treated as objects, these are hate-crimes where the killers are treating these farmers as 'things' instead of as human beings...even if it is only a few-hundred individuals being targetted, it is classified as a genocide.' July 29 2008 PRETORIA. Last night at 02:30 a family in the suburb of Doornpoort near Pretoria
- situated very closely to a temporary UN's refugee camp for foreign Africans -- was attacked at home by armed black men. This entire area of agricultural holdings has been under constant siege for at least two years, with murders, rapes and robberies by large armed youth gangs frequent. Most of the residents here are Afrikaans-speaking - which can be seen by the large number of Afrikaner-churches in the region.Nothing was robbed. Chris Bam, 57, died several days after his son André was killed at their smallholding in Doornpoort, Pretoria on July 28.
The father and son had farmed in Koppies together and when the father decided to retire, the son also moved with him to the Doornpoort smallholding they had bought. Chris Bam, like his son, also was a sportsman, gaining his northern-Free State colours in cycling. 20080301 Florist Willie Slabbert murdered, niece Daleen Kruger dies of fright Meyerton farm 03/03/2007 Johannesburg - African National Congress deputy president Jacob Zuma visited the relatives of an Afrikaner florist murdered on a farm in Meyerton, south of Johannesburg after reading about the family's tragedy. Willie Slabbert was found stabbed to death on his kitchen floor. His niece Daleen Kruger died of fright - a heart attack. Kruger's brother Theuns is a quadriplegic after being shot in the neck and back in 1999.
"He (Mr Zuma) read about it in the media and was so moved he decided to pay a visit to the family," said Munusamy.
Earlier that week Zuma also had a visit with singer Steve Hofmeyr and, according to Beeld, the two chatted about what frustrates Afrikaners.
"Zuma feels about the Zulus, the way that I feel about Afrikaners," Hofmeyr is reported to have said after their meeting at Zuma's home in Johannesburg.

August 15 2008 - JOHANNESBURG, South Africa. Religious minister Dale Roberts (50) died in a kneeling position inside his "Divine Connection Ministries" church while he was shot dead by black criminals. The church, situated at the Uitzicht agricultural holdings in the west of Pretoria was attacked by a gang on Wednesday night. Roberts was shot in the shoulder and bled to death. Police called this a 'robbery' but only a kettle and some teabags were 'robbed'.

Mrs Heila Pienaar, 41, was axed to death and her daughter Charmaine, 18, was critically wounded by an attack yesterday. The girl was able to give an identification of the attacker at the hospital.

This young mother was murdered execution-style on Oct 10 2008 at a Honeydew smallholding while trying to escape with her two small childrenwhile the Fisherman's Village Christian Centre inside was being robbed by a large group of black men at gunpoint. f Harrismith farmer Johannes Spies and of Rudi Roach, a dedicated Zwartkops Afrikaans High School teacher living on a smallholding, we gunned down and killed today. Both unarmed men were gunned down at their homesteads by heavily-armed black men. Very little of value was stolen. Rudi's grief-stricken widow Veronica Roach, right, whose unarmed teenaged-son also was shot three times in the back by these cowardly attackers, said these black men 'had not come to rob us... they came to kill us.'

October 23 2008 Police arrested one murder suspected and shot dead another one after a KwaZulu-Natal businesswoman, Mary Visagie, was shot dead and died in front of her two little girls early on Saturday-morning. Mary Visagie, 38, owner of the Red Door night club in Pietermaritzburg, was shot in the stomach by gunmen who had crashed through the sliding doors of her rented rural in Drummond locted very close to the old Valley of Thousand Hills Hotel.

26 October 2008 KAMEELDRIFT SMALLHOLDINGS, Pretoria. 42-year old Marius MacDonald, a chemist living with his family and his wife's young brother on a Kameeldrift smallholding, was shot down by a three- or four-member armed gang inside his homestead at 1am. He slowly bled to death, the attackers threatened to kill his wife Leonora when she tried to help her husband. The family had 4 registered guns -- but these have to be locked into a safe by law, and thus they were unable to defend themselves.
