Orkney Community Excellent Service Award launched

June 30 2009 – ORKNEY. The panic-stricken woman could only think of calling the editor of the Klerksdorp Record to tell her of a burglary in progress in Lourens Park, Orkney. The editor of the newspaper, in turn, called Insp Kotze of Orkney SAPS, who immediately realised that his colleague, Insp van den Heever, who was out to lunch, lives only two houses from the scene of the crime. Insp Kotze called Insp van den Heever and told her of the crime in progress, and also dispatched a patrol vehicle to the scene. Insp van den Heever, meanwhile, went to investigate, and was only in time to see two suspects running from the scene. The 19-year-old son of the complainant ran after the suspects, and managed to arrest one of them, while the other suspect was caught only a block away by Insp Ngoma, who was on his way to the scene after being dispatched by Insp Kotze. The two men, Cecil Baloyi (26) and Joe Maluleka (31), both from Khuma, Orkney, appeared in the magistrate court in Orkney on 26 June 2009 on charges of a residential burglary.  Both men have previous convictions for burglaries and theft of motor vehicles.Orkney SAPS has since launched a project to honour members of the public for action or information leading to the arrest of suspects. The award will be known as the SAPS Orkney Community Excellent Service Award. story contact:
