Friendly greeting between old friends gets youth stabbed

“Hello boertjie – hello kaffertjie’ greeting between long-time friends elicits a revenge-stabbing from four classmates…
2009-09-22 VANDERBIJLPARK. Jeandré Kruger, 16, an Afrikaner pupil of Vanderbijlpark and his closest long-time black friend. have apparently built up such a close bond over the years that they always greet one another with ‘hello boertjie – hello kaffertjie’. This has been a standing joke between the two long-time friends.
However yesterday when the two friends greeted each other again in the same jocular manner at the Carel de Wet Technical High School, four black classmates took exception, ambushed the white boy outside the school gates on Friday and stabbed him in a revenge-attack while he was walking to his parents’ car, writes Beeld journalist Sonja van Buul.
She interviewed the parents, the injured youth, and the police – but importantly, failed to obtain comment from the key witness who could have shed more light on the nature of this greeting, namely the long-time black classmate…

He’s lucky to be alive…
The attack just outside the school gates nearly killed the Afrikaner youngster. Jeandré was stabbed twice in the back and once in the chest and the knife missed his heart by mere centimetres, said his parents.
Van Buul quotes Jeandré as saying that he was confronted outside the schoolgates on Friday first by one boy, who said he was angered about his jocular greeting to his friend. grabbed him by his shirt and pushed him around. When the two grappled with each other, another person came from behind, stabbed the Afrikaner youth twice in the back and once in the chest. As he sank to his knees, he saw ‘at least four boys he knows from school run away’ , he told the journalist.
- Said the father: ‘those two boys have been greeting each other like that for a long time now, and they both think it’s a huge joke.’
His parents, waiting in the family car at the gates, ran to their injured son, and while loading him into their car to rush him to hospital, told the headmaster about the attack.
- “The doctor said Jeandré was lucky that his heart and lungs weren’t penetrated,’ said Mr Kruger. “My son could have been dead if they’d stabbed him just a few centimetres lower in his chest,’ confirmed his mom Yolanda.
Kruger said they were going to talk to the headmaster Gawie Richter about the incident on Monday. “ Police inspector Kinnie Steyn also confirmed that the stabbing is being investigated by the Vanderbijlpark-police.

Comment: This story remains unbalanced because there’s no comment from the youth’s black classmate-friend about their ‘jocular greeting habits’.
