2007-01-31 Murder of Jeremiah Harman, Buffelshoek, Rustenburg

MARCH 25 2009 – RUSTENBURG, NW. Detective-inspector D Smit of the Phokeng Organised Crime unit near Rustenburg/Buffelshoek, North West province reports that one of the four men who had been arrested in connection with the murder of Afrikaner farmer Jeremiah Harman on 31 January 2007, of the farm Buffelshoek on the Kommiessiedrift road, has een sentenced to life imprisonment.

Arrest warrants are still outstanding for two of the four men after they escaped from custody, while one man was acquitted.

D/A Smit, who investigated the farm murder, said ‘four men were arrested in connection with the murder and robbery of Mr Harman, namely Isaac Mitchel Mondlani, Francisco Chuvongo, Johannes Maluleka and Mhalu Vulani.

  • Chuvongo and Maluleka later escaped from lawful custody, and warrants of arrest were issued in their names.

On 28 October 2008, the case against Isaac Mitchel Mondlani was withdrawn “as there was no prima facie case against him”.

On 25 March 2009,  Mhalu Vulani was found guilty on seven charges. Vulani was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Mr Harman, to five years’ imprisonment on a count of robbery, 15 years’ imprisonment on a count of robbery with aggravating circumstances, three years’ imprisonment on the first count of unlawful possession of a firearm, three years’ imprisonment on the second count of unlawful possession of a firearm, three years’ imprisonment on the third count of unlawful possession of a firearm, and two years’ imprisonment on the fourth count of unlawful possession of a firearm.
