Murder sparks ethnic tension between Xhosas, Zulus
Zulu boy Mfani Sibisi’s murder sparks tensions in Hillcrest, KZN
2009-06-03 Durban, South Africa - The murder of 15-year-old Zulu boy Mfani Sibisi by a Xhosa youth at Embo in Durban's Hillcrest suburb at the weekend has sparked tensions between local Xhosas and Zulus, the Mercury newspaper reported on Wednesday. Police inspector S'bu Sithole confirmed there ‘had been tensions between the two groups since the murder.’
Zulu youths are claimed to be involved in a campaign of terror against Xhosas and intend driving them out of the area. The youths have ostensibly attacked and robbed several Xhosa residents. Several Xhosa people have apparently moved out after receiving an ultimatum to leave the area by Thursday.
The situation arose after young Sibisi ws stabbed to death on Saturday, allegedly by a Xhosa boy. Sithole said police were conducting periodic patrols in the area.-

FIFA cracks down on witchdoctors
Witchdoctors dig holes in costly artificial turf to bury chicken sacrifices…
June 2 2009 - Cape Town – FIFA has cracked down heavily on witchdoctors (“Sangomas, Inyangas”) -- who are damaging the artificial turf at the Somhlolo Stadium in Swaziland with their voodoo-rites. FIFA warned of the danger posed to players. The problem is widespread all across the African continent and can rouse crowds into extreme anger: last year in the Congo, thirteen people died in rioting set off by a man who had run onto the pitch with a bag of ‘’good-luck medicine’ (picture)
FIFA, the world governing body for international football issued a warning that international games could be banned at the national stadium as the damage caused by the Inyangas could pose a danger to players. Also: Fifa need a witchdoctor FIFA has spent hundreds of millions of dollars, installing 52 artificial football pitches all across Africa. These witchdoctors destroy the pitches by digging holes in the middle to bury their sacrifices underneath.
FIFA was reacting to a report carried on the South African football website www.KickOff.com on May 15 when it was disclosed that a Sangoma from either the football teams Black Mambas or the Mbabane Swallows had ripped open a section of the expensive pitch that FIFA had paid for under their ‘Win in Africa’ programme; had dug a hole, burnt a sacrificial chicken and then buried it in the middle of the pitch. http://www.kickoff.com/static/news/article.php?id=8813
Picture: A South African ‘traditional healer’ or Sangoma, practicing his craft. They are often called on to create good-luck medicine, or muti.
----------------------------------------------
Confirming FIFA’s response to the incident, acting National Football Association (NFAS) CEO Zwelonke ‘Sport’ Dlamini said,
- “It is true that we received a call from FIFA and we referred them to the CEO Frederick Mngomezulu, who is away in the Bahamas attending a FIFA congress with CAF Development officer Ashford Mamelodi. “This is the second time an incident of this nature has taken place at the stadium and FIFA has responded quickly after seeing the reports,” he said. Dlamini said Mngomezulu ‘would make an official comment upon his return’, adding that it was likely that FIFA would ban international games once they discovered that the turf is now posing danger to players. “This is national property and it is embarrassing when we as a country fail to protect it. This was done deliberately by people who claim to love football. If such things happen and no action is taken, then our football is not going anywhere,” he said.
Dlamini was also worried about the fact that the matter had still not been reported to the police. On Sunday, an MTN League game between the Manzini Wanderers and Mbabane Highlanders was delayed for over five minutes as match officials tried to patch a hole that was dug at the centre. The patches were also seen at the corners of the stadium. A black T-shirt was used to fill up the hole.A source close to the matter said the hole was allegedly dug on Friday night before Mbabane Swallows played against XI men the next day. http://www.kickoff.com/static/news/article.php?id=8813
‘FIFA NEED A WITCHDOCTOR…’
An editorial by KickOff.com, they noted that FIFA, ‘in formulating their plans to develop soccer skills on the continent with their ‘Win in Africa’ programme, they obviously forgot to consult with a sangoma on the issue.”
Had they done so, the world governing body would not be sitting with a problem that has emerged in Swaziland, where their new multi-million Rand artificial turf pitch at Somhlolo National Stadium has been damaged by an inyanga going through his rites for either Green Mambas or Mbabane Swallows.
- Investigations after the weekend’s League game between the two (which Swallows won 4-2) found that the turf has been mysteriously burnt at the centre spot. Furthermore, black chicken feathers were found scattered all around the area and that part of the artificial turf had been uprooted and underneath were more chicken feathers. The exact extent of the damage has yet to be established and the perpetrators remain unknown.
“This is very bad practice by local teams. We are disappointed by Premier League teams as this facility was very expensive to put into place. We are not sure how much it would cost to repair the damage because you may find out that we would have to resurface the whole pitch, which might be too expensive for the country,” National Football Association of Swaziland CEO Frederick Mngomezulu lamented.
Kickoff ‘s editor notes: “With similar Fifa projects being put in place in other countries like Mozambique, Lesotho, Botswana and many more countries north of our borders, Sepp Blatter and his crew in Zurich will need to do some quick research to locate the best juju man in the world to come up with a solution.
- “Alternatively, they could ask their head honcho in Africa, Jerome Valcke, to hire a gang of local road workers who have vast experience in filling pot holes in our roads…” http://www.kickoff.com/static/news/article.php?id=8218
13 died in 2008 Congo stadium riot over witchcraft fears
On 16 September 2008, thirteen people died when fans at a stadium in East Congo rioted during a match between two local teams. The match between Nyuki and Socozaki erupted into chaos when a fan -- a former Nyuki goalie -- ran onto the pitch carrying a bag which fans suspected to be carrying muti (traditional good-luck voodoo-medicine). The Nyuki team were behind at that stage of the match.
Police tried to break up the violence with teargas as the players fought among themselves and fans began stoning the suspected sangoma. When the teargas canisters exploded, the crowd panicked and rushed for the exit gates. At least thirteen people died and many more were injured in the ensuing pandemonium.

South Africa has world’s highest violent death rates
With 50 murders and 40 ‘culpible homicides’ a day, South Africa has the world’s highest daily violent-death rates.
By comparison, the United States’ city of New Orleans, which holds the dubious distinction of being the ‘murder capitol of the USA,’ records 80 murders A YEAR.

South Africa ranks 123rd out of world’s 144 least peaceful countries
South Africa also ranks 123rd out of the 144 least peaceful countries in the world, according to the Global Peace Index 2009, announced on Tuesday June 2 2009. ‘ It’s fallen fifteen more places since last year, ‘ the Institute for Economics and Peace said in a statement. http://www.visionofhumanity.org/gpi/results/rankings.php
South Africa obtained unfavourable scores for, in order of most impact:
- High level of violent crime,
- High number of homicides/murders,
- Ease of access to weapons,
- High level of organised internal conflict,
- High criminality,
- Little respect for human rights and
- High likelihood of violent demonstrations.
In the African region, South Africa is ranked 21 of the least safe 31 countries. None of the African countries reached the “very high peace’ status. The violent death rate in Africa is estimated at 60.9 per 100,000 population.
- This is over twice the global rate and substantially higher than for other regions where violence is also a major public health issue, such as Latin American and Eastern Europe.
The causes and consequences of violence differ substantially between African regions. Africa's excessively high violent death rate is driven by homicide rates that are twice the global average and which include the world's highest rates of homicide for children under five years of age. The toll of violent death in Africa also reflects the many (civil) war-related deaths, which occur in Africa at a rate six times greater than the global average for this form of violence. http://www.afro.who.int/note_press/2003/pr20030726.html and Sub-Saharan Africa’s violent-death rates: http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/pub-res/epi_of_violence.htm
The most peaceful country in the world is New Zealand, followed by Denmark and Norway. The least peaceful country is Iraq.
- Western and/or Central European democracies account for 14 of the top 20 rankings.
- All five Scandinavian countries are in the top 10.
The United States is ranked at 83, with a "significant negative" being the jailing of a higher proportion of its population than any other country in the index.
Afrikaner crime victims in Randburg, Parkview, Roodepoort
20090530 Marius Potgieter, 33, security employee, shot dead, Weltevreden Park, Roodepoort
Jun 2 2009 Beeld journalist Daniƫlla du Plooy writes that Marius Potgieter, a 33-year-old Afrikaner security official, was shot dead on Tuesday by a man with a rifle in a robbery at the Weltevreden Park security housing complex in Roodepoort. A day earlier, a woman was also robbed of her cellphone at gunpoint with a rifle in the same complex, Beeld reports.
Potgieter was shot dead with one shot through the heart, right in front of his stepdaughter, Sherrie Hulley, her boyfriend Chrizaan van der Merwe en Chrizaan's mother Rita van der Merwe (45).
The murderer looted a gun, some cash and two cellphones. Mrs Van der Merwe was busy clearing out her flat at Devon Valley Nr. 2, to move in with her boyfriend Philip Vorster.
While her goods were uploaded, an unknown man with a rifle got into the flat and held her up at gunpoint, demanding her computer. When she said she'd already loaded it in the van, he tied her up and left her in the flat, taking some money and cellphones.
Just then Ms Hulley, her boyfriend Chrizaan and Potgieter walked in, totally unaware of the danger inside. The two men were tied up.
"My stepfather (Potgieter) works at the security company and tried to stop the robbers. He apparently feared that the robbers were going to hurt me, because I had not been tied up like the men were,' said Ms Hulley.A struggle ensued during which Potgieter was shot with a rifle carried by one of the attackers.
Police emergency number 10111 did not work at all…
Miss Hulley ran out, screaming loudly for help and pushing the car horn. "One of the robbers came outside but when he saw me he jumped across the fence and was gone.' Mrs van der Merwe phoned her boyfriend Philip Vorster. "We tried to phone the police but the emergency 10111 number didn't work at all.' (This was due to the fact that the emergency services in the West Rand were on strike.Click here )
- She said a neighbouring woman was also robbed a day earlier, also with a rifle. "Probably was the same attacker,' she surmised. Potgieter was shot through the heart and died within five minutes at the scene. The Honeydew police station is investigating the case.

All emergency services in this West Rand were brought to a total halt on Tuesday. Dozens of EMS workers demanding better salaries demonstrated outside the offices. “We have 200 people - we just told the control centre no emergency call is going outside or no call is going to be dispatched to any ambulance or fire engines today [Tuesday],” said EMS’ Percy Morokane. 20090501 Gert van Schalkwyk, 28, TV actor in Egoli soap, in second kidnap ordeal in Parkview
Jun 2 2009 Sanri van Wyk of Beeld newspaper writes that Gert van Schalkwyk, 28-year-old actor in the South African TV soap Egoli, had to suffer a second kidapping ordeal from his home - by kidnappers who claim that they 'are watching him'. They dropped their plans to rape him when he said 'they then should give him their gun afterwards, because he would shoot himself'.Van Schalkwyk plays the role of a debonair playboy pilot, Jacques Mynhardt, in the TV-soap. http://beta.mnet.co.za/fanclub/FanClubArticle.aspx?ClubId=62&AId=12664
Police captain Cynthia Magoai confirmed that Mynhardt was kidnapped from his Parkview home in Johannesburg on Sunday at around 11am by a group of men who drove a white Nissan 1400-bakkie.
- They had pulled their bakkie in behind Van Schalkwyk's silver Toyota RunX in his driveway just as he was driving out. A man jumped out and asked for directions. "I still made a joke and said sorry but my GPS was broken', said Van Schalkwyk.
The man pulled a 9mm pistol on him, another man grabbed his car keys, they forced him into the passenger seat and drove off in his car. His kidnappers' bakkie drove ahead of them - and first they got lost in Melville and took backroads to Riverlea, in the west of Johannesburg, where they stopped in a park.
A 'discussion' took place, of which 95% dealt with questions about whether his car had a tracing system. They took his bank cards and demanded his pincode. Two men went off to get cash while the others held him at gunpoint inside his car. Van Schalkwyk: "When they realised that my daily cashcard withdrawals were limited to R1,500 ($150) a day, they threatened to keep me there until after midnight to draw more money.'
- They got angry, pistol-whipping and slapping him after they searched him, and found R200 in cash and a girl friend's petrol card in his pants' pockets.
Threatened to rape him:
They also threatened to rape him. 'I told him: 'do that, but then give me your pistol because I will shoot myself afterwards'," Van Schalkwyk told Beeld newspaper. They then 'gave him a squeeze, pushed him from his car with R20 for 'taximoney', and told him to 'walk away and not look back'.
- He walked to a tent church which was located about 200 metres from the park and walked in asking for help. "The entire congregation came out to help me, I stopped the service,' he said. Church-goers took him to the nearby Langlaagte police station. Stolen were his car, house keys, a blackberry, R1,700 ($170) in cash, and four sunglasses. He's now living elsewhere because 'the kidnappers told me they were watching my house'.
The Parkview police are investigating the case.
Egoli - "the Place of Gold', i.e. Johannesburg -- is South Africa's longest running daily soap series, written by acclaimed SA writer/director/producer Franz Marx. It features the Edwards family, which owns Walco, an International automobile manufacturer.

20090424 Randburg father Justin Browne‘slaughtered like an animal’ - judge
April 24 2009 - Baldwin Ndaba reports in the Pretoria News on April 25 2009 that ‘Justin Browne was slaughtered like an animal,’ said Johannesburg acting judge Gerhardus Hattingh, when when he found three men guilty of slitting his throat in front of his children, then aged seven and three.
Hattingh also found that the three killers; Kenneth Kaman Mukhari, 34, alias Mario dos Santos, Jose Aurelio, 33, alias Domingo Mathebula and Sidumo Mabaso, 33, all from Mozambique, acted with common purpose to kill Browne. The three were also found guilty of robbing the Browne family in their house in Northwold, Randburg, on August 26 2007.
Mukhari who was the mastermind of the robberies in affluent areas around Randburg, was also found guilty on three counts of housebreaking and theft and two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances as well as the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
'He won't be here to watch me grow up'
One of Mukhrari’s victims was pierced in the lung during an attack; two other victims, Shaleen and Allan Strydom, were seated in the gallery to hear Friday's verdict.
Aurelio was also found guilty of housebreaking and theft, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition as well as the murder of his brother-in-law, Reuben Mathebula, who died after being shot four times.
After their conviction, the three appealed to Judge Hattingh ‘to be lenient when passing sentence, saying they were in their early 30s, married with minor children living in Mozambique.’
- The appeal for clemency outraged Justin's widow, Geordie, during her testimony in aggravation of sentence.
She also told the court that like the killers, her husband would have turned 33 on Wednesday. Geordie Browne struggled to hold back tears when she told the court that her children lit a candle on Wednesday and sang Happy Birthday for their father. She offered the judge messages from her children describing their affection for her husband. Daniella, who witnessed her father bleed to death, wrote:
- "He won't be able to walk me down aisle when I get married or be there to celebrate my 21st birthday or Christmas. I love you so much Daddy and I miss you, good night, Daddy."
- Robin, who was three at the time, said: "I miss Daddy lots because he died. I miss playing rally and cards, and throwing the ball to me in Rugby. I miss him when he bathed me and swam with me. "He won't be here to watch me grow up. But I know he loves us and protects us."
Justin's stepson, Tristan, wrote: "I miss my dad because he and I will not be able to throw the ball to each other or play PlayStation together."The three accused will be sentenced on Thursday.
