Manganese mines in S. Africa fire 15% workforce

BHP Billiton company lays off 150+ (15%) of the Hotazel Manganese Mines’ workers

- South Africa mines 80% of the entire world’s manganese (Mn) needs -- and the demand for this ‘miracle”’ ferro-metal is now rising slowly again while the steel-manufacturing industry recovers: Mn is totally essential in the production of steel worldwide and there’s no suitable alternative available, although efforts are being made by scientists to find one.
Which raises a very important question: With BHP Billiton’s South African manganese-mining profits having to be shared out amongst some ten Black-Economic Empowerment partner groups, comprised of tens of thousands of householders who don’t do any work for the company to get paid this money, would any South African manganese mine still have any excess resources left at the moment to survive tougher economic times?
June 18 2009 – HOTAZEL, Northern Cape, South Africa. Only two years after a widely-hailed black-economic empowerment deal to spread its profits among the non-white communities of the Northern Cape, BHP Billiton company has given the already low-paid miners at Hotazel Manganese Mines the worst news of their lives: the company today started laying off more than 15% of its 950-strong work-force by starting negotiations with the Arbitration Commission in Kimberley. http://www.solidariteit.co.za/Tuis/tuis.php
Strategically-important ferro-metal:
However the most puzzling aspect of this story is that the price and demand of manganese are rising again – not dropping, although the company claims that the ‘demand is dropping”. South Africa, as far as selling its manganese supplies is concerned, has always been at the advantage: it’s a strategically-important ferro-metal: it’s important to know that this ferro-alloy also has no satisfactory substitute in any of its major steel-making applications – and that South Africa accounts for some 80% of all the world’s identified high-quality manganese resources, with the Ukraine accounting for 10% and the rest coming from the USA, which moreover, has a very low-grade manganese and very high extraction costs.
This current economic malaise in the North Cape’s manganese mining enterprises thus makes no economic sense at all. The demand and the price is rising again, albeit slowly, and moreover it is a strategic mineral.
So, perhaps there’s something else going on. It’s high time for another explanation, namely the very important behind-the-scenes role which is being played by one of South Africa’s wealthiest black political leaders, Mr Saki Macozoma.
Saki Macozoma’s Black Economic Empowerment deal…
Only two years earlier in 2007, BHP Billiton company had entered into a widely-hailed black-economic empowerment deal, which saw its profits suddenly being shared among a large variety of local black-empowerment community groups, headed by a top ANC management committee member, the multi-millionaire ‘black diamond’ Saki Macozoma. In 2007, BHT Billiton had launched this massive black-economic empowerment deal which supposedly ‘greatly increased the economic participation by the (non-white) Northern Cape communities.” Under this deal, Samancor Manganese - one of the world's leading producers of manganese – teamed up with BEE-partner, Ntsimbintle Mining headed by Macozoma, to create the new mining company Hotazel Manganese Mines, in which the shares’ ownership was split with BHP Billiton and Anglo American Mining. BHP Billiton's president for manganese Peter Beaven praised the deal at the time, noting that ‘the Hotazel mines were among the best in the world, and are set on a strong growth path with strongly enhanced mine lives as a result of the transaction, which was just the start in the company's strategy to transfer 26% of Hotazel Mines to BEE partners. The transaction provides Ntsimbintle immediate ownership of strongly profitable assets and their associated cash flow, whilst Samancor gains access to further resources and reserves, some of which can be immediately accessed from existing Samancor mine operations," he said. "This is undoubtedly the most sensible commercial arrangement for the development of the two sets of rights."
- At the time, nobody seemed to notice the very important fact the new BEE-beneficiaries weren’t going to do a lick of work or contribute anything else of value to earn all this easy cash.
ANC corruption funding scandal:
- From 2007, chairman Macozoma’s so-named Ntsimbintle consortium thus has had to ladle out the Manganese mining profits amongst a large variety of black-economic empowerment groups, made up of Safika Resources, Nkonjane, Wiphold, Northern Cape Women in Mining, the Kgalagadi Development Trust, the Natural Resources Empowerment Fund, the Retrenched Workers Association, the Hotazel Women's Association and the Northern Cape Community Business Men. http://www.buanews.gov.za/rss/07/07122412451003. Goed nieuws voor planeet: 100% afbreekbaar toilet papier

Na twee weken testen van het volgens de reclame ‘100% ecologisch-afbreekbaar nieuw toiletpapier’, geproduceerd in Limburg, kan ik rapporteren dat dit toiletpapier inderdaad zeer snel afbreekt in gewoon kraanwater en ook in tuingrond hier in Dokkum. En de wormen en huisplanten die ik ermee voerde, bleven er ook gezond onder.
Ik besloot om dit spul te testen drie weken geleden, nadat ik in de krant las dat Van Houtum papiermaatschappij in Limburg met een 500,000 Euro subiside van de Europese Unie en de provincie, uiteindelijk na twee jaar hard testen en proberen, een volledig veilig ecologisch toiletpapier had ontwikkeld, zonder schadelijke chemicaliën.
Wolken toiletpapier in zee:
Dit was erg goed nieuws voor mij -- want ik wist al lang uit persoonlijke ervaring, opgedaan tijdens het duiken in de zee bij Kaapstad in Zuid-Afrika waar ik lang woonde, dat ‘gewoon’ toiletpapier helemaal niet afbreekt in de natuur. In de zee bij rioolpijpen, winden tonnen toiletpapier zich in erg grote wolken in sterke slierten rondom het zeewier en bedekt het de hele zandbodem en de rotsen -- tot groot nadeel van al het zeeleven.
- Daarom wilde ik juist ook het Van Houtum eco-product testen: om te zien is om te geloven…
Ik schreef ze dus onmiddellijk met het verzoek of ik een paar van hun Eco-toiletrollen kon testen. Ik dompelde een aantal van de toilet-papiertjes in water en zette het in direct zonlicht -- om te zien wat er met het papier zou gebeuren. Binnen de eerste dag, foto links, begon het toiletpapier in het kraanwater zich al op te lossen in al hoe kleiner-wordende stukjes.
En na twee weken, is het spul nu een dikke soep geworden waarin de piepkleine vlokjes papier al hoe groener en bruiner worden: een bewijs dat het ook wordt aangevreten door algen.
En dat is erg goed nieuws voor de natuur: dit toiletpapier breekt twee weken al sn
el af. Ik voerde deze toilet-papier soep ook aan mijn huisplanten – die het normaal nooit echt goed doen want ik heb niet zoveel met planten – en opeens floreren ze…
Bovendien zijn de stukken toiletpapier die ik op het mini-tuintje bij mijn achterduur strooide, na twee weken ook al bijna volledig verdwenen: toen ik ‘s avonds in het donker ging kijken, zag ik dat wormen ze naar beneden haalden en ze opvraten. Na twee weken is er van die papiertjes bijna niets meer terug te vinden. En de wormen zijn nog steeds duidelijk gezond. Foto rechts van dag 1, tuintje 14 juni 2009:
100% bio-afbreekbaar toilet papier:
De Van Houtum maatschappij ontving 500,000 Euro van de provincie Limburg en de EU – en ik heb het gevoel dat dit wel eens een uiterst belangrijke investering zal blijken te zijn. Als dit toiletpapier het huidige chemisch-vervuilende product zou kunnen verplaatsen, zou het oppervlaktewater van de zee ook snel schoner kunnen worden.
En de rioolverwerkings-installaties waarin het huidige sanitaire papier dagelijks belandt, kunnen dan ook sneller een veel schoner product leveren – het nieuwe eco-toiletpapier breekt immers veel sneller af in water als het huidige planeet-onvriendelijke product.
Ik ben allang op pensioen en ik word dus ook niet betaald door de Van Houtum maatschappij om dit te schrijven. Maar vanuit mijn persoonlijke overtuiging dat dit een heel goed product is voor een schone planet, hoop ik van harte dat de Gemeente Dongeradeel en de vele andere instanties in Friesland ook dit Satino Eco-toiletpapier zullen gaan gebruiken.
Momenteel is het alleen beschikbaar voor de commerciële groothandel, de hotel-industrie e.d., terwijl de provincie Limburg het ook al zes maanden geleden in gebruik nam.
En hopelijk zullen ‘gewone’ consumenten dit planeet-vriendelijke toiletpapier ook in de nabije toekomst in de schappen van onze supermarkten kunnen vinden.
Foto Onder: Test Dag 1: 4 juni 2009: Binnen een paar uur nadat het in water belandt, begint het Van Houtum eco-toiletpapier in al hoe kleinere stukjes op te breken. Na twee weken in water, is het een dikke soep geworden waarin algen floreren.
Van Houtum Directeur Henk van Houtum zegt dat ze ook eco-papierdoekjes produceren – en willen het eco-papier ook voor al hun producten gaan gebruiken. Het hangt helemaal af van de reacties van consumenten.
