Elephant tusk smuggler busted
July 21 2009 -- When 36-year-old Lenyeletse Sedimba crossed the border between Botswana and South Africa, he was a man with a mission. At around 14:00 on Wednesday, 15 July 2009, he met with his potential buyer in Bray to negotiate a price, writes SA Police Service constable A. Smit of Vryburg.
“Totally unaware that there were police officials monitoring the whole transaction, he agreed to sell two elephant tusks for R200 000. Once the transaction was confirmed, members of the Vryburg Dog Unit moved in and arrested the Botswana citizen for illegally being in possession of ivory,” he writes.
Picture: The team who executed the arrest and confiscated the two elephant tusks valued at R1,2- million are in front: Sgt Annalize Smit. Back left to right: Capt Johan Vos, Insp Lappies Labuschagne, Insp Charles Moorcroft, Const Latif Filander and Insp Rassie Erasmus. The two tusks weigh 29 and 22 kg. It is the biggest ivory bust ever in the North West province.
