Is there tolerance in SA for Afrikaners?
Sept 23 2009 -- Dr. Pieter Mulder, Leader of the Freedom Front Plus and Deputy Minister of Agriculture, asks on South Africa’s ‘heritage day’ whether there is a place for tolerance for everyone in South Africa – Afrikaners included?
Picture: Dr Mulder, second left, speaking as deputy-agriculture minister at the AgriMega Week in the Western Cape, described his country’s commercial farmers as the best in the world
Mulder: “Two viewpoints have been heard from government circles about this in the past decade. The one viewpoint was developed by the Thabo Mbeki intellectuals and was again recently voiced by (theologan) Dr. Nico Smith (TV Focus 20 Sept 2009).
‘The ‘stupid Afrikaners’ now are trapped…’
- This Mbeki-view is in short the following: “Europeans came from Europe to colonize Africa. When they started experiencing opposition from the local inhabitants, the French, the Belgians, the Portuguese and the English went back to Europe. The stupid Afrikaners did not realize the crisis, missed the bus and are now trapped in South Africa. That is why they should be tolerated as “Settlers of a special kind”. They however should not make any waves or put any demands to the rulers. “Be reasonable, see it our way”, a clever ANC negotiator tried to convince me,” Dr Mulder said.
He said that this (Mbeki-)viewpoint was unacceptable to him – it’s “historically inaccurate and moreover, creates more problems than it resolves.”
Afrikaners are true South Africans who have no other passports…
“The other government viewpoint is the Jacob Zuma and Matthews Phosa view. In interviews Mr. Zuma, described Afrikaans speakers as “true South Africans whose language is not spoken anywhere else in the world and who do not have any other passports and who have to come into their own right here.” (Beeld 3/4/2009).
- “Naturally this view has also led to some reactions. The future will show to which extent this view was only electioneering and how it will be applied in practice. This view is however more realistic and acceptable.”
We aren’t colonists and have no motherland to escape to:
“Unlike the French in Algiers, Afrikaners do not have a motherland that will take care of it or to whereto they could escape.
- “Afrikaners are not colonialists but citizens with rights. There demands around affirmative action, minority rights, the place of Afrikaans as a language, self-determination etc. are reasonable an in line with the latest international tendencies.”
There are Europeans who live very well as individuals in African countries such as Kenya and the Ivory Coast. They however put their money in banks in Switzerland, enjoy holidays in Spain and send their children to schools in Britain. This is colonialism and adheres to the criticism of Dr. Nico Smith.
“Afrikaners’ position is different. They have made a huge contribution to help make South Africa the strongest country in Africa.
- “As a result, Mr. Zuma becomes the only representative from Africa to be invited to attend the G20 Summit.
Afrikaners want to survive as a community in Africa:
“Afrikaners are still making a contribution because we know that if the South African ship sinks, we all sink together. But Afrikaners also demand more than the individuals in Kenya and the Ivory Coast. We want to survive as a community in Africa. A community has its own communal life; has schools and universities where their language and culture is carried over to the next generation without any discrimination against them.
“Is it asked too much to be one's self in Africa?” Dr Mulder asks.
“ If you have to sacrifice yourself to be accepted and to survive in Africa, then the price is too high. Remember, to cling to a piece of driftwood in the sea after a disaster, is also a very primitive form of survival.”
“Everything mentioned above however does not mean that Afrikaners can just continue as they have up to now. A debate as to how Afrikaners have to adapt, is a more sensible debate than a demand that Afrikaners have to sacrifice everything for survival.”
Here follows four guidelines for such a debate:
1. In looking for answers, Afrikaners have to scale down their expectations and put forward realistic demands.
- Some Afrikaners are hoping for an instant solution where for example the ANC breaks up or at the next election is defeated at the polls. Deeply underlying to this is an effort to have something of the old order re-instated. It will not work like this.
Other Afrikaners again are hoping for a total collapse of the country – the sooner the better. The mistake in their reasoning is that they believe that after such a collapse the old order can be re-instated again. The opposite will happen. After such a collapse, South Africa will most probably be stuck with a military junta by one of the new generals and no constitution or other protective mechanism.
- “The lesson that most Afrikaners still have to learn is that the Afrikaner, after the events of 1994, has to bring its expectations and demands in line with its own numbers, with its real economic power and its capability to retain that which it has.”
2. In searching for solutions for its continued existence in Africa, the solution has to be modern and fair toward others – but also fair towards the Afrikaner.
- “Our situation is not as unique as most people want to make it out to be. In the world there are many modern examples of how minority groups’ languages, cultures and other needs can be accommodated sensibly. Political correctness has lead to an avoidance debating this issue.”
3. The Afrikaner has to make peace with Africa and the fact that he is in Africa.
- “The future of Afrikaans and the Afrikaner will not be decided in Europe, Canada or Australia, but in Africa.
- “The Afrikaner is quick to say that he is from Africa, but his actions often indicate the opposite. There is no way the Afrikaner can escape the realities of Africa and also that which he does not like. Leaving Africa could be a solution for individuals but not for a whole community.
- “To make peace with Africa does not mean giving up our Western cultural roots. It does however mean that the Afrikaner identifies with the problems of Africa and with its expertise play a unique role in Africa.”
4. The Afrikaner will have to create its own future and not put its hope in a government or other groups to rescue it.
- On the one hand it is irresponsible to wait passively for the government to solve all the problems. On the other hand, a government does not have to be a stumbling block. A wise government can, through cooperation and negotiation, make it easier for itself and for such a minority group to live sensibly and make a contribution in the interest of all.””
Mr Zuma’s supporters will also have to adapt, he warns…
“Just like many Afrikaners still have to adapt, many of Mr. Zuma’s supporters still have to adapt too,’ he warns.
- “ Too many Cabinet Ministers and ANC supporters still choose the Mbeki viewpoint (referring to Afrikaners as colonists), as their comments clearly show.
- “ It is a more popular viewpoint in speeches and can be used very easily to explain problems and to point the Afrikaner and/or white people out as the scapegoat for everything. It however does not bring any solutions.”

Siege of Pierre van Ryneveld suburb continues
Injured security guard Willie Venter, 31, fought against armed gang amidst hail of bullets
September 23 2009 -- Hilda Fourie of Beeld newspaper reports that injured security guard Willie Venter, 31, hired to protect the Pierre van Ryneveld suburb in Centurion, fought back amidst a hail of bullets – and despite a bullet in his leg, he managed to chase off the three armed attackers who opened fire on him while he and colleagues were searching for them inside the heavily-guarded security compound. The Pierre van Ryneveld suburb is one of the many secured compounds where families face a constant siege from armed criminal gangs, who attack their homes, terrorise the families inside -- and often arrive with guns blazing..
More than 15,400 families were attacked inside their homes by such gangs between March 2008 and March 2009 according to the SAPS crime statistics released yesterday.
“They fired at least 16 bullets at me,’ said Venter, recovering at home yesterday, “and I shot back with my service pistol. I did everything I could do to keep them away from me. And I do believe that the fact that I shot back, finally made them run away.’ He’s not sure whether actually he hit anyone. After the gun-fight, Venter was treated at the Unitas-Hospital, where a bullet had to be dug from his leg, and he is now recovering at home.
- This is the third time within two years that the security guard was confronted by death in this way, he said.
This latest gun-fight started while he and his colleagues from a private security firm were searching for a gang of three armed men who had been spotted around midnight by volunteer-residents who form 24/7 teams patrolling the large fenced-in area. which has a radius of about 1,2 square km. The suspects kept running away from them and hiding inside the complex, he said. Finally he cornered one man – who immediately shot him in the leg. At that point two more men arrived and also shot at him and the bullets flew around him, he said. However they fled when he fired back.http://www.beeld.com/Content/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/1928/620a4160186f43eeadde208b3926ea2e/23-09-2009-02-26/Wag_skiet_terug,_koe%C3%ABlwond_en_al

The siege of Pierre van Ryneveld
July 23 2009: Gunmen argued whether they should kill housekeeper Anna Maleka while pointing a gun to her head…
July 23 2009 - For housekeeper Anna Maleka, attacked by gunmen in a house robbery in Pierre van Ryneveld's Mustang Street, the thought of seeing her children again is a dream come true, writes Pretoria News journalist Graeme Hosken on July 21 2009. Read entire story
Maleka, 31, on Wednesday survived unscathed the terror of a house robbery surge which has gripped the city over the past two weeks.
The crime wave has claimed the lives of three people and left four homeowners seriously injured. Wednesday's attack occurred only metres from where Pierre van Ryneveld Community Policing Forum member Jan Botha, 51, was shot and critically injured on Sunday night while parking his car.
A visibly traumatised Maleka on Wednesday described in detail how two gunmen spent minutes arguing among themselves about whether and how they should kill her. Standing over her, one of the gunmen, who wanted to execute her, repeatedly cocked and un-cocked his gun centimetres above her head as his accomplice urged him not to shoot. "I was terrified. I thought I was going to die," she said, while tightly holding the hand of her employer, Nadine Pretorius. Maleka was washing a pair of shoes at lunchtime when the gunmen launched their attack. The gunmen, one of whom shoved his firearm into her face, forced her into her room where they demanded the remote control for the gate. Her employer Mrs Nadine Pretorius said: "I do not understand why they did this? Why did they have to terrorise Anna? She would never have hurt them. They have destroyed her. She is a strong person, but this attack has really scared her," she said. 20090719 Three people killed, four critically injured in gangs’ terror reign in Pierre van Ryneveld, Pretoria
Graeme Hosken of the Pretoria News also reported earlier this week that Jan Botha, 51, a Pretoria community policing forum member, was the latest victim of these gangs – critically injured at about 7pm on Sunday night in an attack at his Pierre van Ryneveld home. He was attacked as he parked his car. It is the sixth such attack on Pretoria homeowners in the past week alone - and gunmen have left a trail of terror behind them.
- There had been a brief lull in the horrifying crime wave by armed gangs in this Afrikaner-dominated suburb because of improved community policing in which Jan Botha also had been closely involved. Three white people were killed including one gunman, four residents also were critically injured in a series of highly aggressive armed house robberies, hijackings and rapes by youth gangs which seem be unafraid of getting caught, and don’t hesitate to shoot people down.
“The robbers were not scared of getting caught…’
Hosken reports that CCTV footage from Botha's home security system shows a white Toyota Corolla driving past his home several times shortly before the gunmen launched their attack. The gunmen, who were armed with a Colt 45, attacked Botha as he walked towards his carport and shot him in the pelvis at point-blank range. The footage shows how the gunmen grabbed the keys of Botha's Opel Corsa, wallet and cellphone as he collapsed to the ground before one of them ran towards his wife, Ronel, as she went outside to investigate. Ronel managed to escape by running back inside the house to raise the alarm. Minutes later, the hijackers drove slowly out of the driveway of Botha's home and made their escape. The gunmen were forced to abandon the car and flee on foot when the vehicle's anti-hijacking device stalled the car. Neighbour Jaco Engelbrecht said he was in his garage when he heard a gunshot. "As I ran outside I saw two men driving slowly out of the driveway in Jan's car. I did not know what was happening and watched as they drove off," he said. He added that the men were not in a hurry and had watched him closely as they drove off. "It was as though they were not afraid of anything. It was as though they had all the time in the world and were not scared of getting caught," he said. He said that when he saw Botha he immediately told him to find his wife as he thought there was someone in the house.
Engelbrecht said he kicked down the front door and found Botha's wife. He then rushed her outside. "When I found her she was shaking. I grabbed her and a blanket and just ran. I did not know if there were more people inside and I wanted to get her out of the house as quickly as possible," he said, describing how they had helped Botha until an ambulance arrived. Ruan Vermaak, Lifemed Ambulance Services spokesman, said Botha was in a critical condition in Unitas Hospital. He said he had sustained severe injuries to his pelvis from the gunshot wound. Frans Esterhuyse, Botha's business partner and fellow CPF member, said they were shocked by what had happened."You do not expect this to happen, especially when it happens to someone who is so involved in looking after other people's security. Jan is very involved in the community and is always looking out for our suburb's safety," he said.
- He said crime had been ‘very low in the suburb for the past couple of months’, thanks to the actions of Botha and others. "We had some problems earlier in 2009 with serious crime, but we were able to get the community to come together and bring it under control. This attack is worrying and I am afraid that what is happening in other suburbs is going to start happening here with more and more violent attacks occurring," he said.
The attack last night saw dozens of community members rallying together (again), closing off streets and searching surrounding open fields in an attempt to track down the gunmen. Two radio reports could be heard and when one of the alleged suspects was spotted running along the highway there was a flurry of activity as people raced to corner the man. However, police said the suspect evaded capture, reports the Pretoria News on July 20, 2009
THREE-MEMBER HIJACKING GANG -- STOLE CAR OUTSIDE NURSERY SCHOOL – ONE SHOT DEAD
On April 10 2009, Pierre van Ryneveld suburb was also plunged into similar mayhem after an armed man who was part of a three-member hijacking gang which
had stolen a car at gunpoint outside a nursery school in Pretoria, was shot dead after a hot pursuit through fenced-in backyards by citizens' patrols and the police.
Picture of killed gunman : This was taken by community member Cornél van Heerden of Pierre van Byleveld, Pretoria -- showing one of the guns used by the armed hijackers of a mom’s car outside a nursery school in a Pretoria suburb. The suspect gunman’s body lies about 2m away from the gun he used while he was being chased by police and dozens of members of the community-policing forum. see
Police station commander, director Andre Wiese of the Lyttelton police station, said at that time that the citizen's policing-forum members who went into hot pursuit in cooperation with the police patrols, have probably saved the lives of many. He praised them for their courage.
It’s warfare in the suburbs of Pretoria…
And on December 31st 2008, the same section of Pierre van Ryneveld around Melville and Jim Verster streets was also besieged by a combination of police vehicles, a police helicopter and many of the local residents when a group of armed men also attempted to flee through the gardens after an armed robbery.
On January 16 2009, several large gangs of armed robbers also besieged the suburb in a spate of attacks in which two people were shot, a domestic worker was raped and dozens of citizens terrorised inside their homes. Two of these three suspects were armed with guns, and were shooting wildly towards unarmed citizens while running through the backyards, climbing walls and fences, with one even climbing a tree and shooting straight at the citizens from his high perch at one stage…
Young mom’s car hijacked at school:
The Wild West scene started when a young mom's car was hijacked while she was pulled up in front of her children's nursery school in Pierre van Ryneveld. Three armed men had hijacked this unnamed woman's car from right in front of the school, with two firing off shots in all directions to keep onlookers away -- although there were many toddlers inside the school, waiting to be fetched. The gang hijacked the wrong car however: they had only driven 2km when it ran out of fuel - forcing the men to flee on foot into the neighbourhood's well-tended gardens.
With several cars of the SA national police and the municipal police’s dog units all patrolling the neighbourhood searching for the men - also suspected of an armed robbery inside a local home shortly before the hijacking -- the suspects fled into a backyard and had gone to ground. They couldn’t be found for several hours. However at around 9pm, with the entire community now on high alert and in touch with each other through their community-policing forum radios and cellphones, a woman alerted a community security guard to the three men: she’d spotted them, hiding beneath a bush in a neighbour's backyard. Dozens of community members sprang into action, descending on the street and setting up road blocks. The three men fled, with two firing their handguns in all directions to try and keep the citizens and police away from them. Some community forum members, staying in contact with the police patrols, followed the men on foot while the citizens also threw up several roadblocks with the police to try and capture the men. At one stage, one of the suspects had climbed a tree, shooting off his gun and shouting orders to his two fleeing comrades down below. The second gunman was running, climbing fences and shooting straight at the community forum members who were following him, Wiese said, when he ran into one of the citizens, and pointed his gun at this unarmed man. However, a security guard who was involved in the chase, then shot this man -thus saving the citizen's life, said Wiese. Mr Hugo Minnaar of the Lifemed ambulance service said paramedics still tried to resuscitate the gunman on the scene, but he died. His two comrades got clean away.
The men had held a family hostage in neighbouring Moreleta Park earlier in the day: Mr Johan Bester of Moreleta park and his wife, his daughter, his mother and his mother-in-law had all been relaxing at home when the group of armed men burst in and held them at gun-point. They were all tied up and the men took what they wanted and left in a VW Golf. Mr Bester was able to free himself and proceded to give chase after the men. He took with him only his hand-gun and his cell-phone and was dressed only in shorts and socks. He apparently said on the phone, while he was in pursuit, that he would chase them until they crashed their vehicle into a tree. These words turned out to be profetic as the men turned off Hans Strydom drive into Pierre van Ryneveld and then took the corner into Melville street at high speed. Unable to negotiate the corner they drove straight into a large tree on the pavement and all piled out of the vehicle and took flight on foot. From there they split up and it was at this point that local members of the Pierre van Ryneveld Community Police Forum, as well as other local residents took up the chase. Initially only one of the four was captured but due to the sterling work of members of the Lyttleton Police Department, the other three were eventually caught. The trail led them all the way back to Mamelodi where they caught the last member of the group at approximately 21:00 that night.
Marina Bosch shot in leg, driver Charles Smit seriously injured:
In January 2009, local business owner and mother of two, Marina Bosch, was shot in the leg by one of this armed gang attacks and her driver seriously injured. She’d been cashing up during the early hours of Friday morning when three gunmen stormed her home in Fury Street -- shooting her driver Charles Smit twice in the chest, critically injuring him before opening fire on her. Her husband Christo managed to hide with their small children.
Cynthia Uren and children, terrorised in three-hour ordeal:
The attack came only hours after a foiled attack on another unnamed woman in her home, and shortly after robbers had also stormed the home of Cynthia Uren, attacking and terrorising her and her children in a three-hour ordeal. The attack in Uren's security complex home ended when she leapt from her car as the four gunmen raced off with her in the car carrying her family’s household appliances. "I was not going to let them take me. I was rather going to be shot than dragged off somewhere terrible and raped," she said. The gunmen are believed to have returned hours later to attack another homeowner in the same complex where they held him and his family up, robbing them of jewellery, money and cellphones.
- The gang, according to local community police forum members and police sources, is also believed to be responsible for the attack on Neels Kruger and his children during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Neels Kruger and children under gunfire, domestic worker raped:
Gunmen surprised Kruger's children as they were saying goodbye to friends at the front door of their home. Opening fire on Kruger's children when one of their friends spotted them, the gunmen chased their victims into their Spitfire Street home where they continued firing indiscriminately before fleeing empty-handed when the house alarm was sounded. Security guards who spotted the robbers fleeing along the R21 were forced to abandon their chase when the gunmen shot out their vehicle's tyres.
Less than 24 hours before the attack on the Kruger family, two gunmen attacked a domestic worker in her Collyer Avenue home, repeatedly gang-raping her at gunpoint. Neels Kruger, describing how his children fled for their lives as the gunmen chased after them, said what had happened was frightening. Recalling how the bullets narrowly missed hitting them, he said: "It is only by the grace of God that we are alive. These attacks happen so quickly and when you least expect them," he said. Police spokeswoman Aveline Hardaker, said after these attacks that ‘the police were determining whether the attacks were linked. Police presence has been increased in the area," she said at that time.

Laws for Police Community Forums:
Black MP not fired from Assembly over White Bitch hate-speech
The SA opposition party Congress of the People’s youth leader Anele Mda was merely ‘suspended’ from all leadership positions for a while – but will still stay on as a South African Parliamentarian. This was the ANC’s break-away party’s very weak response to the black MP calling COPE deputy-general secretary Deidre Carter a “stupid, white token bitch.’ statement
23 September 2009 – THE SOWETAN’s Anna Majavu and other news media report that COPE ‘s MP was merely ‘suspended’ from her post as president of Cope’s youth movement, even though she had called their deputy general secretary Deirdre Carter a “stupid, white token bitch”.
It’s not reported whether she’s ever apologised for this slur either – although her party has finally done so in a half-hearted way on September 23 2009.
Cope general secretary Charlotte Lobe was quoted by SOWETAN as saying that: “It was a once-off incident but it speaks to the moral fibre of Cope. That’s not how we expect a Cope member to behave.”
Lobe said Mda had not been suspended as a member of the party and would remain a member of Parliament. “This is not punishment, it is rehabilitation,” Lobe said.
Mda herself has refused to talk to Sowetan but a Cope youth leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Mda had not been slapped over the wrist for her racist comment, but instead been “purged for challenging Mosiuoa Lekota’s autocratic rule of Cope’.
“Why take an informal conversation [between Carter and Mda] and want to formalise it? The real reason why Mda is suspended is because she asked publicly why Lekota was not made to account for contradicting Cope’s policy on black economic empowerment. That was a turning point,” the source said.
- Mda also reportedly refused to allow Lekota to chair Cope’s youth movement meetings when he arrived unannounced on a few occasions. She also exposed Smuts Ngonyama for funding T- shirts bearing the face of Lekota, the source said. Mda reportedly wanted Cope to support an investigation into the arms deal.
“After that she was perceived as a person who wanted to open a can of worms. But if we want to pursue a corruption-free government we can’t continually say this matter doesn’t interest us,” the source said. The source accused Lekota of purging any Cope leader who supported Mbhazima Shilowa to be elected party president at next year’s elective conference.
But a leading Cope member from the Shilowa camp disagreed, writes SOWETAN’s reporter – who has had to rely heavily on unnamed sources for this report and also did not obtain any formal comment from Deidre Carter – the target of Mda’s hate-speech attack.
Said ‘the leading COPE member’: “Everyone agreed we can’t allow our leaders to make racist insults. It’s against the heart of what we stand for.” Cope youth movement general secretary Malusi Booi agreed. “She was only suspended for the Carter incident.”
Apology to the People of South Africa by Cope
- September 23 2009 - ‘The CWC takes this opportunity to apologise, on behalf of the members of the Congress of the People, to the people of South Africa that such behaviour should even be alleged to have been committed by its member especially one who is in leadership. As COPE we re-iterate our commitment to a non-racial and non-sexist South Africa. We also re-iterate our belief in building a membership that is disciplined and respectful of our values as a democratic African country. The CWC also regrets that, due to the need for it to give this matter serious consideration, it has taken longer than it would have liked to address this matter. On this note we call on our membership to respect this disciplinary process. For more information please contact Secretary General Charlotte Lobe on 082 496 8025.

Allan Boesak too ill to give lecture in Amsterdam
“His diabetic condition prevents him from travelling to Europe’ - Free University spokeswoman in Amsterdam
September 23 2009 – AMSTERDAM. Liberation theologist Rev Allan Boesak, who teaches Public Theology at Stellenbosch University, has cancelled his scheduled guest-lecture at the Free University of Amsterdam on Thursday ‘after his doctor advised him against travelling to Europe’, an university press release has announced. http://www.vu.nl/nl/Images/pb%2009%20114%20Boesak_tcm9-107201.pdf
The guest lecture on the subject of liberation-theology in modern-day South Africa was scheduled in the Main Building of the university for Thursday, September 24 (tomorrow), the university spokeswoman Mirjam Gouweloos confirmed.
She told me that Rev Boesak suffers from a chronic diabetic condition and that after obtaining advice from his doctor, determined that his health would not able him to travel to Europe at this time.
“Dr Boesak would still want to hold this lecture as soon as his health allows it,’ she said. Contact Ms Gouweloos at Tel 31 20 598 3607 email m.gouweloos@vu.nl

Violence in South Africa not proof of ‘a failed liberation…’
Today at the university, Prof Dr S D K Ellis of the Africa Study Center at Leiden University is also holding an inauguration speech at the Social-Sciences Faculty of the Free University, entitled “South Africa and the Decolonization of the Mind.”
He argues in this speech that Europeans and Africans alike, should view the history of South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa from a much ‘wider geographic perspective’ than they are doing now, which at the moment is clouded, (negatively influenced) because it is held up against the “spectacular economic success of many Asian countries, inclusively those which were former European colonies.’
“The violence so deeply embedded in South African society should not be interpreted as proof of a ‘failed liberation (from colonial rule) but rather as the result of a scala of problems which are deeply interwoven into South African society.
“ Europeans and Africans should develop a new vision on this history, which far too often is still viewed through the prism of colonial oppression. We all need to decolonise our minds,’ he concludes.
273 babies dumped in Gauteng hospitals…
The ailing Far East Rand Hospital in Springs is the biggest ‘baby dump’...
Jack Bloom, health spokesman for the Democratic Alliance opposition party, has called for urgent intervention in all those communities where the largest number of babies are being abandoned at local state hospitals. “The economic recession obviously plays a role but many of these babies are probably born to desperate foreigners,’’ says Dr Bloom.
22 September 2009 – PRETORIA. -- “The number of abandoned babies has soared in Gauteng hospitals, from 200 in 2007 to 273 in 2008,’ Dr Bloom said in his statement released through SAPA. He obtained these statistics after demanding them in a written application to the provincial health MEC, Qedani Mahlangu.
“From January to July this year, 212 babies were abandoned, an average of 30 a month, compared to 23 a month last year and 17 a month the year before.
“The Far East Rand Hospital has been worst affected, with 87 babies abandoned there from January 2007 to July this year. Other hospitals with high numbers over this period include Leratong (74 babies), Tembisa (65 babies), Charlotte Maxeke Academic (61 babies) and Chis Hani Baragwanath with 60 babies. Some hospitals have registered no abandoned babies at all, including Steve Biko Academic, Pretoria West and Helen Joseph.
Boom: “According to Mahlangu, the procedure is that cases are reported to the police, the baby is assessed to determine whether he/she requires hospitalization, and then referred appropriately for placement. Further, there are "inter-sectoral programmes which include poverty alleviation, child protection, information and communication and appropriate social development interventions".
“This increase in abandoned babies is very worrying,’ said Dr Bloom. “The economic recession obviously plays a role, but many of these babies are probably born to desperate foreigners. There should be specific interventions at those hospitals that are most affected and the areas where their patients come from.”

MASSIVE RISE IN ABANDONED BABIES – ORPHANAGES ARE MUSHROOMING
Charities have also reported a massive rise in the number of abandoned babies. Indeed, the need now is so great that child-care homes are mushrooming all across the land, launched mostly with private funds. Besides being dumped in area hospitals, newborns -- many from HIV-AIDS-infected mothers -- often also are left at the doorways of community-health nurses, health clinics, baby-care charities and church-doors throughout South Africa.
The latest orphanage being built is the newly-launched Ikaia LikaBaba in KwaZulu, where they plan to raise abandoned babies from Zulu-ethnic origin in their own culture in the Empangeni area. (The Father’s House)http://www.ikhaya.org.za/ It was launched by white South African citizens Shaun and Melanie Grant at the cost of $150,000. (US).
AIDS CAUSES ABANDONED FERAL YOUTHS – AND THEY CAUSE THE CRIME EPIDEMIC…
It’s not a new problem: there also are many hundreds of thousands of abandoned ‘older’ street children roaming the streets of South Africa, mostly left to their own devices after their adult carers died of AIDS and becoming increasingly illiterate and isolated from mainstream society. The effect of this massive abandonment of the next generation of children, is that these for the most part, feral youngsters growing up on the streets, also form the hard-core of the many tens of thousands of totally uneducated, armed criminal killer-and-rape gangs which have turned the country into the most violently-criminal society on the planet after 1994.
Church hatch for abandoned babies near Soweto Baragwanath Hospital
The vast majority of babies aren’t abandoned at hospitals, however. Alex Duval Smith for instance, reported in The Independent on Thursday, 13 July 2000 from the Berea Baptist Mission in Johannesburg that a baby-hatch for abandoned babies was installed there to ‘deposit’ unwanted infants. He interviewed volunteer-deacon and engineer Raphael Kayamba. who dealt daily with the ‘living, kicking proof’ of the South African Aids crisis, and who commented:
- "The mothers who are abandoning their babies are young," said Mr Kayamba, who has dedicated his life to finding homes for infants left at his church's door of hope. "The mothers come here almost as soon as they are out of labour at Johannesburg Hospital near by, bringing their small children. The reason is Aids. But some of the babies are so small that you can tell they were brought to us even before the mother received the result of her child's HIV test," he said. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/a-hatch-of-hope-for-south-africas-abandoned-babies-707473.html
Far East Rand Hospital in Springs, where most of the infants in Gauteng are being abandoned according to these latest statistics submitted by Dr Bloom, also arguably is the very worst place to leave one’s baby behind: it has been plunged into an increasingly severe health-crisis, with a vast shortage of doctors and nurses creating such an unhealthy situation for patients, that the avalanche of complaints last month prompted Health and Social Development MEC Qedani Mahlangu to launch a personal inspection tour of and the one at Pholosong “to monitor the delivery of quality health services…’ (statement by spokesman Mandla Sidu, Cell: 083 602 6169, and Phumelele Kaunda, Cell: 082 334 9851, Department of Health and Social Development, Gauteng Provincial Government - 13 August 2009
SA sued over ‘white refugees emergency’ in High Court
SA is in a ‘state of anarchy’ where fundamental rights have been suspended….
White Refugee Documents Legally submitted to High Court, Western Cape & Federal Court, Canada
by Lara Johnstone http://crimeninuria.blogspot.com/2009/09/hc-wc-1996309-notice-of-intention.html
In a Notice of Intention: Application for Leave and for Judicial Review, filed with the High Court of South Africa, Western Cape, Cape Town, on 22 September 2009, I cited the Minister of Citizenship, Canada, and the Nobel Institute, Norwegian Nobel Committee as Respondents Nine and Ten, requesting them to take notice of the State of Effective Emergency, regarding South Africa's Unrepresented White Refugees.
Other respondents in the matter, include, among others, Respondent Two: The Director of National Prosecutions; Three: Hon. Patricia de Lille; Four: Former President Thabo Mbeki; Five: Former NPA Nat. Director, Mr. Bulelani Ngcuka; Six: Former SAPS Commissoner Jackie Selebi; Seven: Former Min. of Corrections BM Skosana; and Eight: Former President Nelson Mandela.
Take note of the Unrepresented White Refugee Issues:
Specifically, the Notice requests Respondents Nine and Ten, to take particular notice of the White Refugee Issues cited, under points, [10], [11], [12] and [13], among others:
- [10] For the Record: State of Effective Emergency: South Africa’s Unrepresented White Refugees: The Tyranny, Disorder, Crime and Corruption of the State, has effectively resulted in a state of anarchy, where fundamental rights of due process, natural law, administrative law, safety and security, etc have been effectively intentionally, deliberately and maliciously suspended, as a result of corruption, incompetence and indifference. South Africa is heading towards a socio-economic, political and military failed state of Zimbabwefication. For example, South African Law Commission Issue Paper Six, alleged the Criminal Justice System to have a severe Legitimacy and Inefficiency Crisis, in that:
[10a] Since 18 June 2002, the Applicant has accused Official Legislative, Judicial and Executive Officers of the State that their actions of commission and omission have, and continue to, demonstrate an intentional, deliberate, malicious and hostile indifference and unwillingness to provide for judicial and administrative due process and safety and security protections to the Applicant, and law-abiding, taxpaying ‘White Refugee’ citizens constitutional interests; by implementing policies which negligently, intentionally and deliberately foster and support criminal activity, ethnic and social conflict, tyranny and anarchy[20].
[10b] The repeated response from these State authorities, to these allegations was simply more actions of commission and omission unwillingness and indifference to its constitutional social contract duties and responsibilities; including repeatedly, by Respondents Two to Eight.
[10c] Foreign Law – the United States Declaration of Independence -- provides for the remedy, that when a government intentionally and repeatedly demonstrates a deliberate, malicious and hostile indifference and unwillingness to act in accordance with its social contract duties and responsibilities, towards its citizens; then such a government is accurately described as tyrannical and corrupt.
[10d] Citizens committed to a healthy social contract with their Government have a duty and a right, when any government becomes tyrannical and corrupt, and acts in destructive breach of the social contract; to alter or abolish such government, and to institute new government.
[10e] Endorsing mob-violence: In contrast to Respondents Three to Eight’s strategies endorsing and inciting violence, mob justice and ungovernability, in their alleged ‘Anti-Apartheid’ (sic) struggle for a non-racial (sic) South Africa; the Applicant is a citizen committed to non-violent civil-disobedience, and the rule of law. Accordingly the only means the Applicant has of altering and abolishing a corrupt and tyrannical government, and instituting a new healthy social contract government, is to deny such a corrupt and tyrannical government, any respect as a legitimate authority, until it demonstrates that it is committed to upholding its social contract duties and responsibilities, as an impartial, legitimate and procedurally fair authority.
[10f] As of 07 June 2007, the Applicant does not recognize the legitimacy of any South African Official or Office, which is not willing to demonstrate its sincere and serious commitment to upholding its duties and responsibilities to the constitutional Social Contract.
[10g] While South African Legislative, Judicial and Executive authorities have, and continue to, refuse to confront, enquire into, or acknowledge the reality of the tyrannical Disorder, Crime and Corruption of the Failed State, and its effective nullification of the Truth and Reconciliation Social Contract, which has effectively resulted in a state of anarchy, where fundamental rights of due process, natural law, administrative law, safety and security, etc have been effectively intentionally, deliberately and maliciously suspended; a foreign court/tribunal has finally had the courage to impartially enquire into, and courageously confront, the reality of this evidence.
In the State of Ontario, Canada, on 27 August 2009, Board Member William Davis of the Refugee Protection Division of the Immigration and Refugee Board (“RPD”), in file number MA8-04910, found white South African, Brandon Carl Huntley to be a Convention Refugee, as a result of:
- (a) South Africa's serious human rights problems, including police use of excessive force against suspects and detainees, which resulted in death and injuries, vigilante violence and mob justice: violence resulting from social, racial and ethnic tensions;
- (b) Affirmative Action (AA) and Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) law requires employers with 50 or more employees to ensure that previously disadvantaged groups, collectively constituting more than 90 percent of the country's population are represented adequately at all levels of the workplace;
- (c) Affirmative Action that has stripped the country of 75 percent of its skilled population and is responsible for the deprivation of the constitutional and social rights of white South Africans;
- (d) As reported by the SAIRR, over a fifth of white South Africans have emigrated over the past ten years, their main reasons being crime and affirmative action;
- (e) White Poverty is growing, as a result of AA & BEE legislation which reserves 80 percent of new jobs for blacks and favour black-owned companies for tenders;
- (f) Killings and other violent crimes against farmers and their families continue in rural areas; and farmers are concerned that they are being targeted for racial and political reasons;
(h) The Mandela "rainbow" revolution has become a cloud of gloom; where 40 percent of South Africans live below the poverty line, and unemployment is between 23 - 40 percent; violence runs unchecked throughout the country, and a woman is raped approximately every 26 seconds, where less than 1 percent of rape convictions lead to a conviction. Murderers also run free, without about 19,000 murders in 2006, more than 50 per day;
(i) A report documenting that most of ANC members are racist: this report states that ‘it is time for the ANC to face up to the fact that most of them are racist and marginalized non-supporters and that it is the policy of the ANC and its endemic corruption that has brought South Africa to the brink of civil war’;
(j) Police Corruption: Police Corruption is endemic and the chances of reporting corruption, ever seeing daylight are slim indeed.
(k) Indiffierence to protection of minorities: DA Leader, Mr. Tony Leon's accuses the ANC goverment of indifference to the lot of minorities, and hostility to whites;
(l) All of the above and more, shows a picture of indifference and inability or unwillingness of the goverment and the security forces to protect White South Africans from persecution by African South Africans.
(m) Systemic, excessive violence against whites: The objective evidence of living as a white person in South Africa, is that crime and violence resulting from social, racial and ethnic tensions contribute to a socio-political culture with a very significant possibility for white South Africans to be repeat and persistent, and systemic victims of excessive violence during any criminal acts, perpetrated against them by African South Africans; as a result of a socio-political cultural climate where the State is deliberately and intentionally unwilling to protect white South Africans; because they are white South Africans.
[10h] The SA Government (& Respondents Two to Eight)’s Commitment to the Social Contract with White South Africans, ranges from Negligent Indifference to Malicious Contempt to Endorsement of Rape and ‘Kill the Farmer, Kill the Boer’ Torture and Boer Genocide:
- Former Minister of Safety and Security, Charles Nqakula is by far not the only person who is blatantly indifferent and contemptuous towards whites concern about crime, as he stated in Parliament; that ‘whites who keep complaining about crime, should either just go blue in the face, or leave the country’[21].
- In 1998, then President Nelson Mandela (Respondent Eight) said the same thing. He claimed that fear of crime was mainly a white preoccupation fomented by a mainly white-owned press. Of people who left the country because of crime, the then President (Respondent Eight) said, “Good Riddance”[22].
[10j] The ZimbabweFication Future for Whites in South Africa:
Since the Zimbabwe land seizures began a decade ago, some 4,000 owners (virtually all white) of Zimbabwe’s most productive farms have been forced out, along with their 320,000 workers (almost all black) and their families, amounting to 1m-2m people. Although around two-thirds of the land has been allocated to 140,000 poor black families, the rest has gone to Mr Mugabe’s relatives and comrades, most of whom have little or no interest in farming. Vast tracts of fertile farmland now lie fallow; agricultural output has slumped. One of Africa’s biggest food exporters is now one of its main recipients of food aid. Of 6,500 white commercial farmers in 1980, when Mr Mugabe came to power, only about 500 remain.
Last November, in a case brought by Mr Mike Campbell on behalf of 77 other white farmers, a tribunal of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), a 15-member regional group that includes Zimbabwe, ruled that all land seizures since 2000 were discriminatory and violated both domestic and SADC treaty law. Mr Mugabe and his ZANU-PF ministers claim that the tribunal has no legal standing. In a further violation of the tribunal’s ruling, around 170 white farmers are now being prosecuted in Zimbabwe’s courts for refusing to leave their land.
In June the tribunal held Zimbabwe to be in contempt of court for failing to enforce its earlier ruling and asked SADC to take up the matter urgently. But at the group’s summit earlier this month, no mention was made of this or any of the other matters bedevilling Mr Mugabe’s seven-month-old power-sharing arrangement with Mr Tsvangirai. It was a stunning victory for the 85-year-old president. In a speech this week, Mr. Tsvangirai promised to stand by the farmers. Yet he has blown hot and cold on the issue since he became prime minister. At first he said that not a single crime against white farmers would go unpunished, though no prosecutions have ever been brought.
According to exiled Zimbabwean businessman, Mr. Mutumwa Mawere, former CEO of Shabanie Mashaba Mine Holdings (SMMH), Mugabe does not believe that a white person can own land in Zimbabwe. Furthermore, many leaders within the SADC, share Mugabes views that white persons cannot be African and do not have a right to African land. Of legal matters, before Mugabe Judge’s, which involve a white person or farmer: he says “the outcome would be known before trial.” Mr. Mawere states that the biggest mistake that African governments made at independence was the failure to resolve the citizenship issue regarding whites. Finally, Mr. Mawere states that African leaders who fought alongside Mugabe in the 1960s, such as President Jacob Zuma, are no different from Mugabe; “President Jacob Zuma you see today is not different from Zuma the freedom fighter you saw during the liberation struggle and therefore, you should not expect him to support [white farmers] cases at the SADC summit.” For a white person to “trust someone [in Africa], with state power to be good to [them], then you must be living in another world.”[26]
Under Point [11], the Applicant, submits the Why We Are White Refugees Petition into the court record....
[11] Nuremberg Principles & Citizens Privilege: Accordingly the Applicant herewith informs the Tyrannical and Corrupt State Officials of South Africa (c/o and via Respondents Two to Eight, witnessed by Respondents Nine & Ten), the Applicant has signed the Why We Are White Refugees Petition (why-we-are-white-refugees.co.nr), herewith requested to be submitted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, on behalf of all White Refugee Petitioners, to the Minister of Citizenship & Immigration for Canada, to be submitted to the Federal Court of Canada, for their due process consideration, in the matter of Minister of Citizenship and Immigration and Brandon Carl Huntley; Court File No. IMA-4423-09.
[11a] The Applicant, as a Why We Are White Refugees Petitioner, herewith requests the Federal Court of Canada, to take notice of the repeated intentional, deliberate, malicious and hostile indifference and unwillingness of the South African (and African) Government(s), to provide for judicial and administrative due process and safety and security protections to the Applicant, and law-abiding, taxpaying ‘White Refugee’ citizens constitutional interests. If Canada, and other countries do not grant White Refugees convention status, then they will be condemning African White Refugees, to an intolerable situation in Africa, where their basic rights, security and lives, are in danger.

Plettenberg librarian, 78, stabbed to death by ‘poor teens’ she often gave food
Murder victim ‘often made her killers sandwiches’
2009/09/22 Neil Oelofse GARDEN ROUTE CORRESPONDENT oelofseN@avusa.co.za http://www.epherald.co.za/article.aspx?id=475132
Two (black) teenagers from a neighbouring township were arrested for the murder of 78-year-old Johanna Blignault, left, a long-time librarian of Wittedrift, Plettenberg Bay.
Reports are that the 78-year-old Afrikaner lady was stabbed to death after she had made sandwiches for the arrested youths – as she’d often done.
Apparently the uouths had lso stolen some electronic bling, a small amount of cash and frozen food from Mrs Blignault’s house.
Dominee Chris du Preez of the Wittedrift Dutch Reformed Church said the two boys, aged 16 and 17, from the adjoining black township of Green Valley, ‘had frequently visited Johanna Blignault at her home, where she gave them food.’
Police who found Blignault’s blood- soaked body outside her back door also found evidence suggesting she had made them sandwiches in her kitchen on Saturday afternoon. A bloody knife was found at the scene.
The arrested youths were ordered to remain in custody when they appeared briefly in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Police said their case was postponed to Tuesday next week for a bail application.
Evidence was also found to suggest Blignault had been raped, but police said a post-mortem would be conducted today to establish the facts.
The two suspects used the R150 ($15) they allegedly took from the kindhearted Afrikaner woman’s purse to buy alcohol.
The police arrested them while drinking at the home they shared with the grandmother of one of the boys in Green Valley on Saturday night. A DVD player was also found with the two youths -- after police earlier found a radio and frozen chicken, also allegedly from Blignault’s home, in bushes outside the grandmother’s house.
- Both youths had previous brushes with the law. One was out on bail and was to be sentenced yesterday on a charge of housebreaking, while the other was serving a suspended sentence for stealing a car.
After the murder Du Preez set up a Facebook site for Blignault, and by yesterday 102 people had already joined. “I did it to provide a forum for people to express their sorrow and anger. It is better to talk about this than not,” he said.
Du Preez said Blignault was “a real community leader who served as Wittedrift librarian for more than 50 years without remuneration”, and was loved by the community. “It was heartening to see the people of Green Valley come in droves on Saturday to mourn her.”
Du Preez praised the police for their “sterling work” and quick response to the crime scene. “Detective Inspector John Nomdoe did fantastic work. From the moment he arrived he acted calmly and professionally and took control of the situation.” Plett’s head of detectives, Superintendent Zola Zatu, was also singled out for praise. “He spent hours with us while we waited for the forensic team from George, who were also fantastic.”
This is the symptom of a sick society
Blignault’s son, Jeffrey’s Bay attorney Ernie, said yesterday his mother was “a very soft, well- loved person”. “She really did not deserve this. This is the symptom of a sick society. It feels as if we are sliding back into the middle ages.” He said his mother had chosen to stay in Wittedrift after her husband George, a teacher at the local high school for 35 years, passed away 13 years ago.
- “She lived in Wittedrift for 54 years. She was happy there. She enjoyed helping the people in her work as librarian and in her contributions to the church.”
She is survived by her son Ernie, 50, and daughters Gene, 45, and Helena, 51. She will be buried in Wittedrift on Friday. The Wittedrift community was still in shock yesterday, but everyone contacted attested to Blignault’s generous spirit. A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said she was the first to come across Blignault’s body after the elderly woman failed to answer her telephone. “I went to check because I knew she was home. It’s unbelievable that she has been attacked by people from the very community she served selflessly for 50 years.” http://www.epherald.co.za/article.aspx?id=475132

Afrikaners in Krugersrus, Springs live in fear
2009-09-22 Karen Nagel, 45, Springs, murdered by 5-member attack gang at Krugersrus home - husband Jan survives:
September 22 2009 -- André Damons of Beeld and Hannes Myburgh of The Star report that the primarily Afrikaner residents of the tiny Krugersrus suburb in Springs, a working-class mining town near Johannesburg, live in fear after 45-year-old resident Karen Nagel was gunned down in cold blood by a five-member armed gang which invaded their home at around 9:30 on Saturday-night.
- Her husband Jan survived miraculously when the armed men stormed into their home through the sliding door and started shooting at one: he stopped a bullet with his hand but otherwise is not injured. Nothing was robbed.
Community members are angered about the senseless murder, reports Beeld. and the fact that the police took such a long time to show up. The Nagel couple’s son-in-law George Gerber, who lives five houses away, heard the shots, ran out, saw one of the attackers run away and set off in hot pursuit – but was unable to catch him, he said. Community members mounted an organised search but the men just disappeared. Resident Louis Nel, 36, said there’s ‘about a weekly shooting in our suburb’.
“Basically we are just sitting around, waiting who will be targetted next. Every slight noise awakens my wife and kids. The men don’t sleep any more, they drive around nights, patrolling the neighbourhood.” He says a large construction site adjacent to the small Afrikaner-suburb might be the source of the crime-wave. “We have asked the municipality which bought the site, to clean up the site, which houses many vagrants. At times that place sounds like a war-zone, with 15 to 20 shots fired at one time on a regular basis.’
- “However police spokeswoman Amanda Greybe claims that ‘no serous crimes have been reported over the past two weeks. “This is one of our more peaceful suburbs, and this shooting is the first in a long time,’ she said. No-one was arrested for Mrs Nagel’s murder. Also interesting: nothing was robbed.

The Star’s journalist also reported claims by other residents discussing this murder attack, that ‘the police had allowed the five attackers time to flee by arriving too late.’
The record shows that shortly after the shooting, many family members started calling 10111, 112 and 911 pretty much simulataneously, trying to get through on any of these numbers.
The Star reports that paramedics were the first to arrive -- at about 10.30pm, an hour after the shooting and tried to stabilise Karen before she was taken to Glenwood Hospital in Benoni, where she was first put on life-support machines, and then declared brain-dead. The first police unit arrived only 45 minutes after that. Another police spokeswoman senior superintendent Noxolo Kweza, commented that ‘these allegations about the police's actions would be investigated. “http://www.int.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=15&art_id=vn20090921040043929C903887
20090919 Mrs Blignaut, 80, murdered by crime gang in garden: Plettenberg Bay
We also obtained a first report from a Plettenberg Bay resident that the elderly mother of a local attorney, Ernie Blignaut, was shot dead on Saturday-afternoon in broad daylight on September 19 while she was working in her garden. The old lady, 80, was gunned down by ‘two 16-year-old youths who were part of gang and had planned the attack for some time.’ We will try to obtain more information about this.

SA CRIME IS ‘UNIQUELY VIOLENT ‘ ADMITS SA POLICE COMMISSIONER, MINISTER:
Sept 22 2009 – PRESS CONFERENCE, SAPA -- Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said police were perturbed by a 41.5% hike in the number of business robberies in the 2008/09 financial year and an increase of 27.3% in residential robberieswhere heavily-armed crime gangs target families inside their homes.
“We are deeply concerned about the increase in house robberies ... it is one of the crimes that are the most intrusive and personalise the crime experience," he told a media briefing in Cape Town. We simply cannot tolerate a situation where people do not feel safe in their homes."
Mthethwa bemoaned the "uniquely random and violent character" of the 2.1 million serious crimes reported in South Africa last year, of which 32.7% were "contact" crimes associated with violence. http://www.news24.com/Content/SouthAfrica/Politics/1057/88f416bd4160437d8f6c11cc304b0e31/22-09-2009-10-40/SA_crime_uniquely_violent
Downtown Johannesburg becomes a Potemkin fake
September 22 2009 – By Adriana Stuijt. AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands. A dismal picture of downtown Johannesburg was painted in a TV programme on NOVA TV2 last night, entitled , "Surviving in Johannesburg", on the NOVA-TV2 programme.
It showed very clearly that some of the most important matches of the FIFA World Cup 2010 football tournaments are going to be held in the most violently-criminal city in the world – Johannesburg.
The report was produced by Dutch journalist Rob Schröder, who has 'gone back and forth since January 2008" to record the changes in life in Johannesburg, which is facing a high level of crime due to the huge influx of millions of illegal immigrants from other African countries.
Local authorities now are trying to ‘sweep the streets clean’ in time for the two weeks duration of the FIFA World Cup 2010 football tournaments.
"How is it possible to control this city full of hope and fear and to turn the inner city into a sustainable, safe environment?" Schröder asked – showing a desperate picture of the battle for survival waged by many tens of thousands of desperately poor, uneducated and chanceless Africans speaking hundreds of different languages, who have over the past 15 years arrived enmasse from the rest of the continent.
Claiming to be ‘asylum-seekers’ for the most part, these desperate Africans live iin the once so orderly streets of a now nearly derelict downtown Johannesburg and are seen stripping the vacated homes of working-class Afrikaner mining-families – described by historically-challenged journalists as ‘middleclass whites’ - but who fled the place more than a decade ago.
Sanitising downtown just chases off the poor… for a while:
Schröder also showed how the SA police are attempting to 'sweep the streets clean' of hundreds of thousands of homeless street urchants and ‘informal traders’ in time for the World Cup 2010 in June next year – basically they are trying hard to turn all of downtown Johannesburg into a Potemkin village, where a fake atmosphere of ‘happiness and prosperity’ they want to present, merely hides the continuing desperation and constant fear of famine hovering just behind the freshly-painted facades.
The film also shows the effect these police-actions are having on the migrants.
- Alas, the story soon sank into the usual left-wing rubbish showing the ‘rich street life of the poor,’ presenting addicts and vagrants in various cultural expressions such as rap and street music and incredibly filthy streets.
They did however also show the ruins which Johannesburg’s once finest buildings have been turned into – such as the Ponte building and the once so luxurious five-star Carlton Hotel, that icon of the collapse of a rich society which only 15 years ago, was the wealthiest on the continent. Developers with close links to the ANC-regime now are now attempting to clean all this up in time for the WC2010. They are filmed going bout the streets muttering sentences which include words such as ‘clean sweeps’ and ‘crowd control’ and even send small groups of pro-WC2010 campaigners, blowing their dreadful plastic vuvuzelas, to be filmed by the TV cameras of the Dutch film-makers. It’s an open question whether the authorities will be able to maintain this fake-prosperity front in downtown CBDs like Johannesburg, once the tourists have all gone home and Africa’s millions of desperate migrants will be able to return again, unhindered by police sweeps and cleansing brigades with white-wash paint buckets and brooms. http://www.nederland2.nl/uitzendinggemist/
