PIKETBERG - 3 August 2010 – The 1,500-strong community of Wittewater, just outside of Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC)’s De Hoek factory in Piketsberg, will now have access to clean and sufficient amounts of water. This is thanks to the cement manufacturing giant PPC, which launched the Wittewater Water Treatment and Supply Project during a handover ceremony attended by Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson. With approximately ten percent of the De Hoek workforce residing in Wittewater, the project forms part of PPC De Hoek’s social and labour plan SLP, which aims to ensure that PPC contributes meaningfully to the sustainable economic development in the areas which it operates. Together with the Bergrivier Local Municipality, which also covers Piketberg, and the local Moravian Church, PPC identified the community’s dire need for a usable water supply. Having experienced sub-standard water quality and severe water shortages, the 1,500 inhabitants of the Wittewater community will now have access to a drinkable water source throughout the year. Made up of two phases, the project has seen an upgrade of the current water pumps in the community with the upgrade of the existing water plant set to start later this year. Requiring an investment of R1.2 million by PPC, the project also provides temporary employment for over 25 community members.“PPC’s commitment to sustainable development in the communities it operates in is pivotal to our success as a company. Ostrich farming project for new black farmers at Klipplaat, Karoo:
PPC in 2009 also announced investments of R4.5million in an black-economic-empowerment scheme – namely an ostrich-farming project with the local “Ikhwezi” municipality at Hardwood Farm, Klipplaat in the Karoo. The Hardwood Farm project, a partnership between PPC and the Ikhwezi municipality, will see its 16 black starter-farmers breed ostriches for their meat, skin and feathers.With the help of local ostrich farmer Andries Oelofse, in the business since 1992, the 16 women and youngsters are expected to grow the project into a commercially viable operation and provide employment to more than 100 people.
Minerals and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica, PPC chief executive John Gomersall and Ikhwezi mayor Sizwe Mngwevu were among the dignitaries who attended the launch.One new ostrich farmer, Mandisa Saki, could not contain her excitement. "I feel proud and glad. There are no jobs here. We didn't have jobs. Now we will create jobs and employ people in the community. PPC has taken our poverty and thrown it away," she said, adding that she had already received orders for ostrich eggs and feathers.The municipality acquired Hardwood in 2002 to train emerging Angora goat farmers.Municipal manager Thandekile Mnyimba said “ Ikhwezi decided to try ostrich farming so that the Karoo was not solely dependent on the Angora and mohair industries, which were declining.”http://www.ppc.co.za/news_gallery_photo.cfm?gid=39#
