When ‘Just Crime’ is not Crime anymore…
Today, 8th March 2010, the South African government in the form of Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa rightly said that “Farm and rural killings should not be politicised and all murders should be treated equally”. He further stated that “"We do not see it as anything else political or racist, we see it as just crime.”
So my question, thus the reason for this article: “Are all incidents treated equally, and is all crime, “just crime”?
Firstly, let me give a brief summary to those who are not familiar with the South African government system. In South Africa the government system works like in any other country where there is a democracy.
- The newest census figures states that 79.7% of the population is black, followed by whites 9.1% , Coloureds (mixed race) 8.8%, and the remainder 2.4% are categorised as Indian or Asian. In other words it is the opposite of the United Kingdom or United States. Minorities are protected in these First World countries -- and any attacks on minorities are dealt with in a harsh fashion by the media and government.
In South Africa, this is where things get a bit complicated for some strange reason when it comes to be a government that represent everyone on a fair and equal basis.
- To start, let me give some examples of ‘racism’ in South Africa.
Last year an unfortunate case came to light where white, minority, students at the University of the Orange Free State shamelessly put black workers through an initiation. (The video can be found on Youtube.) The ladies were treated in a disrespectful way and as such the behaviour of these students were criticized, and rightly so. The incident was all over the news, locally and internationally. Most black people in South Africa became extremely angry which would be understandable with some ANC members using the issue to their selfish purposes, which just helped to encourage more racial hatred.
Let’s go back another year, where a young (white) boy, traumatised by a personal incident of a farm attack, took matters in his own hands by going into a township and murdering black township dwellers indiscriminately. It was a cowardly act and once again made world headlines. The boy’s actions received harsh treatment from the law and once again South Africans were up in arms and some politicians and parties played the race card. Inciting more hate.
Another year back, a white male with two black accomplices threw a worker into a lions den to get rid of him. An awful incident which should get everything justice throws at these perpetrators. The incident made international headlines and was shown as an example of a racist incident because one perpetrator was white while his accomplices that were black were disregarded. Politicians of the government were outspoken about this murder and we still hear this today, in forums, debates, as a prime example of “white on black” racism. So you will agree with me when I say that the above examples are not crime but have a racial intent?
- To South Africans and the world, the problem in South Africa seems to be a specific race. Or at least that is what we are made to believe. My following question would be, when last, if ever, did you hear about similar incidents as above, but with the roles changed? I am not talking about “just” crime. I am talking where it’s clear racism like the examples above were involved?
Chances are you never heard anything. Ever. You also will not hear anything due to the media, political correctness and some individuals within the South African government that still think it's at 'war'. Individuals with selfish personal agendas or revenge. To say I make this up is like saying humans do not have fear. Its human. I am not saying it’s the whole SA government but to say there are no people with hidden agendas are very naĆÆve.
I will give examples of where I see racist incidents against whites in South Africa which made an impact on me over a period of time of the unfairness of these incidents. There are so many, as to put them all here would take me days and probably leave most of you with “post traumatic stress” reading through all the stories.
So here are similar, true, stories but with the perpetrators switched.
- David Jones, of the Daily Mail describes the brutal assault of a white woman, Mrs. Ame Brown, in her Johannesburg home, in the absence of her husband, who was working a night shift. Mrs. Brown's two young sons were bound at the wrists and forced at gunpoint to watch by the four-strong black gang which had broken into their flat as their mother was violated in turn by each of the gang members. Says Jones: "As the first man made way for the second, he spat out the hate-filled words Ame, an Afrikaner, will never forget: "For years you Boers always took from us. Now we're taking from you." In fact, Ame Brown worked as a care assistant looking after mainly black children at a Johannesburg home for youngsters. But her work on behalf of such an underprivileged, have-not section of the population obviously cut no ice with her assailants. Her race was all that mattered as far as they were concerned.
- Lambert Theron, 20, Kempton Park Wimpy manager - CCTV filmed this young Afrikaner’s last moments: being hacked to death in a revenge-murder by two black co-workers – who accused him of ‘lying like all white men do’.
- Then there is Jock de Gouveia? This elderly gentleman died after (black) robbers dragged him for some kilometres on a rope behind his bakkie.(Pick-up) His face was totally disfigured. The police caught the three perpetrators after one was caught having Mr. de Gouveia's sim card and TV in his possession.
I want to ask. Is it “just crime” because something was stolen, or is it just a convenient excuse? Do you really have to torture, humiliate, murder or even rape your victim for a cell phone or television? Is this “Just crime” -- Or merely an excuse by some to brush the seriousness of these crimes under the carpet?
Alice and Helen Lotter - One of the most shocking recent examples in 2009 was that of two anti-white racist crimes involving the torture-murders of Alice Lotter, 77, and her daughter Helen, 57, which caused a wave of abhorrence amongst the entire white community because of its incredible cruelty.
- The women, both frail, were tortured to death at their farm in Allenridge in the Free State on April 1, 2009. According to forensic evidence, the Lotter mother and daughter died excruciatingly painful deaths: First tortured by being stabbed with broken glass bottles into their vaginas; one of the women also had her breasts cut off while she was still alive – and then both women’s blood, police forensic experts found, had been used to paint the ANC’s anti-Afrikaner hate slogan ‘Kill the Boer Kill the Farmer’ on the walls of their homestead. The list of crimes against "white" minorities, victims of murder and torture goes on.
Where is the media, other than the small column on the third page of the newspaper? The national or international outcry? Where is the outcry from the government, or their leadership or lack there of to deal with these issues on a fair basis? Is it because you do not know? Do not care? Or is it because you know, and only care when it is not one of your own, yet only shout “racist” when it’s a specific race? Are we so brain washed, politically correct that we are unable as human beings to treat things in a balanced way?
Or are we so indoctrinated by mass media, becoming sheep of “popular general opinion”, or too scared, even lazy, to travel the lesser road of doing research and reaching out to people from other races? Maybe they have a point when they complain, yet are immediately silenced with the word “racist”.
- During 1999 the South African infantry has been rocked by the murder of seven individuals, six officers and one civilian by Twenty-eight-year old Lt Matubela, after losing his salary from repeated misconduct, went on a rampage in the base. His targets were only whites while not shooting at any other race. What was interesting about this case was that the government said it was racism. But, not racism from Lt Matubela, but from his colleagues!
The victims becomes the ‘perpetrators’, and the perpetrator, the true racist, get away with it. What does this say about our society? Or where we are heading? Though this was a military incident it is still interesting looking at the dynamics in which ‘racism’ is sold to the people.
The majority are the ones who tolerate crime, there for we much judge the racial tolerance of criminals. At night we can only pray that we would not be murdered by somebody with a vindictive racial attitude. We do not get to vote on the attitude towards crime, yet we are told that it is not geared towards us. “It is “only” crime. We have to take the word of the majority, that criminals do not use racial bias.
- In other words: “Criminals are just criminals and incapable of being racists too, unless of course they are part of the minority”. Everyone else is, well, “Just criminals, doing “just crime”; this is what the statics and some government officials make us believe.
The only ones that believe these officials are the uninformed or the racists themselves that roll their heads gleefully the other way. The media seems to believe that these allegations of hate crimes or racism are all fabricated lies. These crimes have been continuing since 1994 and are ever on the increase, to such worrying statistics that GenocideWatch.org, founded by Gregory Standon, is very concerned.
The South African government does what everyone government in power does when there is a crises, by playing it down by minimizing the seriousness of the matter. A few years ago it was also done with crime. “What crime”: it was asked by the then President Mbeki? Today we see the same cycle but this time “the what”, was replaced with “the just”.
- When will people, both black and white open their eyes and see some of these murders for what it is not. Not general crime, like theft and murder but where the victim of one race is tortured by someone from another race. It is definitely NOT “Just crime”. The question needs to be asked. When is crime not crime anymore?
Are we as individuals, organisations, media or government so blinded by our prejudices and colour coded eye patches, that we only cry out when the victim is one race the perpetrator another?
“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing” - Edmund Burke
This article probably asks more questions than to give answers, but the sole purpose is to make you think. Everyone is not as equal as some people make things out to be. Maybe you see this already, but then I might ask, why are you silent?
- In order for human kind to evolve to the next level, we will need to look at these things on an equal basis and treat them as such. If not, we are just re-inventing the wheel of racism, with the roles changed. One last question is why should these things be dealt with on an equal basis?
My answer is, if you do not, it creates more hate from one group against another because of ignorance and the lack of direction from leaders. These type of hate crimes are becoming more and more by the day because people are not educated by the government leaders or media,to realize it is not one specific group that is to blame, but that its a sickness which affects all. PS. On a personal note I want to add that it is not easy for me to write articles like this. I am an open minded individual and the reason I write this is because I see these things for what it is. Injustice. I can stay quiet and sit in corner like everyone else. I choose not to.First, I do not follow main stream news as the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I'd love to, because ignorance is bliss, and not being different makes life easier. When you know more on these issues because of research and experience than most, it is difficult to speak the truth and not be labeled by some individuals. Main stream media determines the popular path well traveled, and anyone not agreeing becomes the outcast, of the road less traveled. I am willing to walk that road because as a human that is the difference between us and sheep. Thought, insight and to think for yourself.I am human.
SA farmers unfairly disadvantaged
PARIS – FRANCE “Government subsidies in the agricultural policies of certain countries places unfair pressure on South African commercial farmers,” Dr. Pieter Mulder, Freedom Front Plus leader and deputy minister of Agriculture said last week in Paris, France.
“These protectionist measures make it impossible for South African farmers to compete on an equal footing with these countries,” according to Mulder.
Dr. Mulder made this statement at a meeting of more than forty agricultural ministers which is presently taking place in Paris, France.
The meeting is being hosted by the International Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It is the first time in 12 years that agricultural ministers of all the most important agricultural countries in the world meet.
“Because 47% of South Africa’s agricultural exports go to Europe, it is important that South African farmers’ views on reasonable international competition and trade are stated clearly at an international forum such as this. The majority of the countries who subsidies their countries so heavily with state funding and in this way distort international markets, are found to be in Europe. South Africa had already in 1997 started moving toward a more free market system and scrapped the majority of restricting government measures,” he said. The ministerial meeting also held discussions on the role of governments in the solutions of the world’s food problems. One of the discussion sessions about this issue was lead by Dr. Mulder. The objective of this meeting was to reach a consensus Ministerial CommuniquĆ© containing agricultural policy views which will serve as guidelines for food security worldwide for the future. http://www.freedomfrontplus.co.za

20090826 Sheila Hesk, 79, beaten to death; dumped under pile of furniture, Sandown retirement village
March 04 2010 By Bronwyn Gerretsen -- Not only did 79-year-old Sheila Hesk's murderer stab her repeatedly and beat her until her bloodied and heavily bruised body lay lifeless on her bedroom floor, but he then wrapped her up in a duvet, piled furniture on top of her and covered her with her mattress.
Her protruding feet, tied at the ankles, were all that the general manager of the Sandown Retirement Village, in Pinetown, could see of her when he went to her ransacked house in August last year. Hesk lived alone in her one-bedroom unit. These were among the details heard in the Durban High Court this week, where Siphamandla Mhleli Nxele, 22, is on trial for Hesk's murder. He is also facing charges of housebreaking with intent to rob, and robbery with aggravating circumstances. Nxele is alleged to have stolen two cellphones, an alarm clock radio, three gold rings and a wristwatch from Hesk's unit. Post mortem results reveal that Hesk died from a "blunt force head injury". She had been assaulted and stabbed several times. Her wrists were bound behind her and her ankles were also tied. An attempt had also been made to strangle her. Nxele's fingerprints were found on the buckled burglar guards of her unit. However, he claims that the police made him touch the burglar guards to transfer his prints. Testifying before Judge Esther Steyn, Nxele said he had been walking to work at about 5.30am on August 26 when four policemen arrested him and took him to Hesk's home. He said they showed him the window where they said he had broken in, and made him touch the burglar guards. However, under examination by the prosecutor, advocate Bheki Manyathi, Michael Roberts, the manager of the village, testified that CCTV footage showed that the only vehicles to enter the complex at that time had been the bread and newspaper delivery vehicles. He said he had found Hesk's body at about 9am, after being alerted to the broken burglar guards and open back door by Hesk's friend and neighbour. Only then had he called the police. According to the state, Nxele was arrested only on September 10.Closing arguments will be made on Friday. The Mercury.

2010-02-19 Lee-Ann Taylor, 32, terrorised, manhandled by cops Woodlands KZN
By Sharika Regchand- Pietermaritzburg Bureau The Argus - Two Pietermaritzburg police officers face charges of assault and crimen injuria after being accused of trying to push Lee-Ann Taylor, 32, of Woodlands, off the road and then manhandling her. She was so traumatised by Sunday night's incident that she was admitted to hospital until Wednesday and treated for shock and trauma.
Taylor said “ it had been the most frightening experience of her life and she was having nightmares about being chased by officers since the incident.” She had been on her way to her parents-in-law when she stopped behind a white unmarked car at an intersection. When the robot turned green, the car in front did not move, and she drove around it to get across the intersection. The car driver then hooted and flashed his lights at her while trying to force her off the road. Fearing a hijacking attempt, she drove straight to her parents-in-law, with the men in pursuit. Once there, two men in civilian clothing got out of the car and approached her.
- "They pushed me against the car and handled me roughly. They said that I had run a red light, but I had not violated any traffic light rules." Taylor said the officers subjected her to a barrage of abusive language before handcuffing her. Her three-year-old child saw the incident and began screaming and crying. A neighbour approached and was told that the men wanted Taylor to apologise for jumping a red robot. The men eventually let her go. Taylor's neighbour identified the men as officers of the Mountain Rise police station, as she had seen them before.
Taylor has engaged an attorney to address the matter on her behalf. Police spokesman Vincent Mdunge confirmed that Taylor had opened a case and said it would be investigated. He said (inaccurately) that the officers ‘ had charged Taylor with jumping a red robot and reckless and negligent driving, which was also being investigated.”
In a similar incident, a Cato Ridge woman, Jude Ward, also alleged she was assaulted at the Camperdown police station by a traffic officer who had followed her there from the N3 on January 18.
- Ward had been driving in the fast lane along the N3 when a man in a white twin-cab bakkie tried to pass her. As she tried to move from the fast lane, the man placed a blue light on the bakkie's roof and pursued her. Ward had also suspected a hijack attempt and drove to the police station for protection. However, instead of being protected, she was assaulted by the traffic officer, who had followed her to the station, allegedly in view of Camperdown police officers, who had done nothing to assist her. The officer then arrested and charged Ward with reckless and negligent driving, and failing to comply with a traffic officer's instructions. She laid a counter-charge of assault against the officer. The matter is being investigated and Ward intends suing the State for damages. sharika.regchand@inl.co.za http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=15&art_id=vn20100219063207807C651916

Two arrested for farm-murder of Belgian lodge-owner Etienne Cammerts, 61, Villa Nora, Limpopo
March 02 2010 Limpopo police have arrested two people in connection with the murder of a Belgian national on his farm last week, a spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
- Etienne Cammaerts, 61, of the farm Corn Hill in the Villa Nora area was found murdered last Friday, said Senior Superintendent Ronel Otto.
He went missing after taking workers to their homes around midday. Neighbours later found him in the veld with his hands and feet tied and his throat slit.
Nothing was stolen from him. A 29-year-old and a 20-year-old were arrested by the organised crime unit in villages around Villa Nora on Monday, she said.
The Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA) said it was shocked and horrified by the murder. "Our prayers are with the next of kin of all the victims, and also the government and people of Belgium," said Theunis Botha, acting chairman of the CDA. Beeld reported that Cammaerts and his wife had lived in the area for six years. - Sapa http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=15&art_id=iol126751771598B425
Invested his life savings in the wildlife reserve lodge next to Botswana border
The Belgian news media headlined the gruesome murder of 61-year-old Belgian businessman/farmer on his Limpopo farm. He hails from the Wezembeek-Oppem municipal area in Flanders where he was a well-known businessman before he has sold up his business and invested all his savings in the South African wild-life farm – building his ‘dream-lodge’ there. Cammaerts rented out tourist cottages for nature lovers who visited his newly-built Lodge. When he failed to respond when his life partner Ingrid tried to raise him on their walkie-talkie on Friday-afternoon, friends and police mounted a large search. The Belgian news media claims that he was ‘robbed’- however his friend in South Africa Marco Ruiter and SAPS Supt. Ronel Otto said there was no evidence of this. His hands and feet were trussed up together and his throat was slashed next to a water-pan. He was found next to his farm-vehicle. http://www.nieuwsblad.be/article/detail.aspx?articleid=NU2MUSSI It was reported from Tervuren in Belgium that Cammaerts had sold up his courier business Distridi there to ‘realise a dream’ – moving to South africa to ‘build up a new life – far away from the stress. However his dream turned into a nightmare. He was brutally murdered at his estate close to Botswana – and where he’d built the Cornwall Game Lodge. contact info: +27 (0)14 763 4110 +27 (0)72 329 2360 cornwall@telkomsa.net
“Land-Reform’ blamed for many farm-murders:
- Despite the dramatic failure of its sonamed ‘land-reform programme’ – which alienates agricultural land from ‘white’ farmers and hands it to black tribal communities who have no experience nor knowledge of commercial farming – the regime continues to force white farmers off the country’s scarce agricultural land. At the moment only less than one percent of the country’s total land surface is still being food-cropped as a result of this self-destructive policy – black farming communities usually fail to produce excess food for the commercial market within three months to a year of being given these alienated farms – for free. The news broadcast noted that "Mr Damas had refused to sell up and was determined to remain on the farm." Apparently his body is already scheduled for shipment to Belgium. http://www.radiopretoria.co.za

Ambulance personnel raped; Afrikaners attacked in Botswana
A mini-war broke out at a guest-house outside Gaborone, Botswana while three Afrikaners defended themselves with fire-extinguishers against a seven-member gang of Zimbabwean attackers who had crawled through the security fencing and fought the South African guests with fighting sticks, bricks and stones. Two of the attacked guests required hospital treatment afterwards, reports Jeanne-MariƩ Versluis on March 7 2010 in Beeld newspaper.
The Beeld journalist heard the harrowing tale from 23-year-old Maasstroom Limpopo farm foreman Danie Krige, 23, who said he and a friend who wanted to remain anonymous stayed at the Gaborone guest-house on Thursday-night. They had brought documents for his friend’s brother – a livestock farmer in the northern part of Gaborone. Afrikaner farmers have run livestock herds there for many decades. The group had selected the guest-house as the central meeting place because it has several cottages on one fenced-in property. Krige said at around half-past-midnight they heard a noise outside and when he and his friend looked out the window they saw two men heading for them, screaming: “: “We’re gonna kill you!”
The two Afrikaners grabbed the fire-extinguisher and sprayed the attackers to try and stopped them. “This only slowed them down a little bit,’ said Krige. The friend yellowed loudly to his brother who was staying in the cottage next door – and then the three men went outside the cottages to fight back against the men which had swelled to a ‘sizeable number’. The attackers kept trying to climb into the cottages and the Afrikaners wouldn’t let them. The attackers threw stones at them and the two sides engaged in what can only be termed hand-to-hand combat. One of the attackers managed to grab a laptop computer from Krige’s room and Krige’s friend chased the thief – but was stopped when he was attacked with a brick and a plank yielded by two other men. A guest in the cottage next door also was hit by a flying brick and he required hospital treatment too. The Afrikaners then started bashing the attackers with the fire-extinguisher. “Things got pretty confusing, they kept coming for us,” he said. Krige said it appeared that the attackers came from Zimbabwe. The Botswana defence force and the police were called and arrived quickly, at which point the seven attackers fled into the veldt. Three were captured. The laptop computer is missing. He said his friend had injuries to his elbow and back which required stitches. “It was like a little war’ he said. They have already returned to South Africa, Krige said. http://www.beeld.com/Content/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/1928/6163bec1ea5b4411a7b0d008f4a89352/07-03-2010-10-24/%E2%80%98Ons_gaan_julle_doodmaak!%E2%80%99

Two ambulance women brutally raped while trying to treat squatter-camp burn-victim
2010-03-07 Amanda Roestoff – Beeld - ROODEPOORT - In the third recent attack targetting ambulance-personnel, two female emergency-services personnel member were raped on Friday-night while they were trying to help stabilize a little boy who had suffered burn-wounds. Two two women, aged 25 and 35, had been attending an emergency call at the Milestoker circle around 9:45pm at the Main Reef Road in Roodepoort at the West Rand. SAPS sr supt Noxolo Kweza said when they arrived a mother, her little boy and two male relatives of the woman were waiting for the ambulance at the roadside. The child had suffered burn-injuries which weren’t serious, said Kweza. The people who called the ambulance apparently live in a nearby squatter camp. While the two ambulance-attendants treated the child the mother went home to fetch a sweater for the youngster – and shortly thereafter three armed man showed up at the ambulance and ordered the two male friends to take the child and get out. “The emergency workers then were held at gunpoint, dragged into the bushes where they were raped and indecently assaulted,” said Kweza.
However the squatter-camp residents had meanwhile alarted the police and helped search for the attacked women after their rapists had fled inthe ambulance. The women were found about 200m from Milestoker circle. Kweza said the ‘women still are too traumatised to make any statements’. They were rushed to Life flora-clinic in Florida Roodepoort. Johannesburg emergency services spokeswoman Ms Rana Radebe slammed the attack on the two ‘dedicated ambulance women’. This is the third time that ambulance personnel were targetted recently. And emergency services’ personnel members have told Beeld that he will no longer allow women to work alone on teams. Ms Carrie Shelver of People Opposing Woman Abuse made the rather obvious remark that ‘no woman is immune against rape. We should never become used to nor accept these levels of violence,’ she said. No-one was arrested of course. http://www.beeld.com/Content/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/1928/a24d396c068c4ae6aa8b780c30926420/07-03-2010-10-24/Ambulansvroue_aangeval

20100306 Frail parkinson’s sufferer Robert Naude Hunter (68) hacked to death with panga – 3 killers: AH Mullerstuine VdBijlpark
- Not stolen: the frail old man’s hunting rifle; a shotgun; several bags of discarded groceries…
March 6 2010 – VANDERBIJLPARK - Parkinson’s sufferer Robert Hunter, 68, was hacked to death with a panga on his smallholding in Mullerstuine near Barrage early on Friday morning. The frail Afrikaner man also suffered from joint and bone illnesses and was barely able to walk – let alone defending himself against three young, black male attackers. He was found by his distraught son shortly before 5am, said SAPS Inspector Kinnie Steyn, (pictured left).
Relatives said the old man was only able to walk ‘one small step at a time’. The son Freddy - who lives in another cottage on the same smallholding, woke up to find three young black males attempting to steal his father's car. They fled after he fired several warning shots. Entering the cottage with the alerted security company officials the frail pensioner was found with a large wound in his chest ‘caused by a sharp object’ confirmed police. Next to the father's car they found a hunting rifle and shotgun. Several bags of groceries were later discovered in a neighbouring field. when police arrested three suspects several hours later they were found with a stolen shotgun, cellphones and jewellery. The men were being sought for other armed robberies in the area. They would appear in Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court on Monday. On this picture by Beeld journalist Sonja van Buul – who was the first journalist on the scene – SAPS inspector Kinnie Steyn is consoling another witnesses, Freddy Hunter’s distraught fiancee Meisie Smith, 52. http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?from=rss_South 20Africa&set_id=1&click_id=13&art_id=nw20100305183841831C578999

"Bankers and the white elite on Mauritius have the same reflexes,' concludes Dutch anthropologist Drs. Tijo Salverda who studied the Franco-Mauritian elite for two years towards his PhD-project "Sugar, Sea and Power' at the Free University of Amsterdam.
He interviewed Franco-Mauritians on the island itself, in France and also in South Africa for the Consec-research programme at the FU. Read their blog: www.standplaatswereld.nl
Let’s just keep one important historical fact in mind about this Indian-ocean island off the coast of Africa: while this Dutchman writes about ‘white colonials” it’s an inaccurate and needlessly prejudicial term -- there were no permanent settlements of any indigenous ‘first nations’ on the Indian-ocean island at all. The island was totally uninhabited until 1598 and thus anyone settling there first could also not be described as a ‘colonial’.
It was the Dutch East India Company which set up a small trading post on this uninhabited island – naming it after Prince Maurits, the count of Orange-Nassau – the son of Wiilliam of Orange – the forebears of the present Dutch Royal family. They built Fort Frederik Hendrik and developed the harbour from about 1638 and also set up the first sugar plantations; and to this day sugar remains the most important source of income for the island. The Dutch also imported somedestructive species such as the goat, apes, rats .. The Dutch ‘colonisers’ also wiped out the dodo because they were keen on its eggs. The VOC however stopped ‘investing’ in developing Mauritius further after a powerful hurricane hit it in 1695 and the economy of the settlement collapsed. So the VOC then moved all its investments and its indentured labourers (forefathers of the present-day Afrikaners and Boers) to its other settlement at the Cape of Good Hope – thus vacating the entire island. The French moved in from about 1715. They named it Ćle de France and its first mission was headed by Guillaume Du Fresne D'Arsel. These are the forebears of the French settlers which this Dutch researcher now describes as ‘white elite colonials’.
The French imported the first slaves to Mauritius from Madagascar and the African mainland – and the rest, as they say is history… now this large island houses 1,2-million people comprised of an extra-ordinary mix of people who are divided by four major religions and a startling variety of ethnic groups : 68% are “Indo-Mauritanians' (Hindus are in the majority with 62% and a small minority of Muslims); 27% are Franco-speaking Creoles; (mostly Roman-Catholics); 2% are French-speaking ‘whites’; 3% descend from Chinese traders.
Thus while the vast majority speak some form of French or another - its official language is English: because it was conquered by the British in 1810 – who renamed it Mauritius. In 1814 it was officially incorporated as a British Crown Colony during the Peace treaty of Paris. And in 1835, when the British ‘abolished slavery’, they recruited indentured labourers from then-British India – to replace the African slaves. Other indentured labourers also were imported from Malaysia and China. Mauritius became independent from British rule in 1968 and now is part of the British Commonwealth. This following series of videos of the hard-hitting Italian documentary Africa Addio shows the way in which the British handed over its former African colonies:

Salverda’s conclusion after interviewing this tiny French population group – which he describes as ‘elite’:
“An important focus in studying these processes of change and the position of the Franco-Mauritians is, especially, the interaction between Franco-Mauritians as an elite and ethnic community. In Mauritius ethnicity is an important, and often tensed, aspect in daily life and significantly influences the social relations of Mauritians.
- “On the one hand the element of ethnicity enforces the position of the Franco-Mauritians, because an important pursuit of elites is to prolong their position at the top of the social hierarchy over time. Elite groups therefore have to encourage the social cohesion of the group itself (horizontal loyalty); established by ethnic affiliation in the case of Franco-Mauritians.”
“On the other hand in order to prolong their position elites have relations with, and require acceptation by the rest of society (vertical loyalties), which is negatively influenced by ethnicity. In the case of the Franco-Mauritians it (their ethnicity) is a clear disadvantage because they are an elite that is visible by its white skin colour (and the connotation of the colonial past), complicating obtaining vertical loyalties.”
And after two years of all this prodding and questioning he's still not planning to get a real job: instead moving on to study some more – this time to probe the "social-cultural patterns in the financial world'.

Potholed roads worry insurance companies
Insurers: ‘rapid rise in pothole-related claims’:
Cape Town – Insurance companies report an increase in the numbers of claims due to the country’s growing network of potholed roads. Short-term insurers report a ‘clear increase’ because of damage to vehicles although the official figures are still being awaited, Letitia Watson of Beeld newspaper’s business sectionSake24 reports. Short-term insurer Santam recently introduced a new coded system to keep track of all the pothole-related insurance claims.
SA National Roads Agency ignores potholed secondary roads only builds tollroadsWatson quoted Trevor Devitt, head of communications at OutSurance as saying that they are ‘definitely receiving more damage-claims because of potholed roads. The damage usually is done to wheels and undercarriages of the vehicles.’
‘SA National Roads Agency is required to fix potholes – duped motorists can file claims for pothole-damage:’
Hollard insurance brokers’ legal director Danny Joffe also confirmed the rising trend. He also blamed the recent ‘heavy rains for the deterioration of roads’. “We also noted that many of these potholes aren’t noticed by drivers who drive through them instead of around them because of oncoming traffic. These potholes can cause serious damage to the wheels, the springs and the undercarriages of motor vehicles’.
Joffe also pointed out that the SA National Roads Agency can also be applied to for damage-claims if the motorist’s insurance company doesn’t cover these. “The National Road Agency can be held liable as it is legally required to repair a pothole within a reasonable time after it was reported,” he noted. Cash-cow tollroads much more important than repairing secondary network:
However – the NRA’s constant stream of press releases and expensive radio advertisements make very little mention of the growing pothole-problem on the nation’s secondary roads-system: instead they concentrate on their aggressive toll-road building programme for which they received some R750-million in capitalisation in 2009 from the European Investment Bank: http://www.nra.co.za/live/content.php?Category_ID=70
Pothole damage often expensive to repair:
Danmar Autobody in Johannesburg’s workshop manager Glen Ramsden said they recently repaired a due to pothole-damage and it cost R70,000. “This was a high-performance vehicle but even the undercarriage-struts and supports had been broken straight through:” he said.
Short-term insurer Santam has also recently introduced a coded system on their computer with which they now keep track of all the pothole-related insurance claims.

Ambulance personnel raped; Afrikaners attacked in Botswana
“We’re gonna kill you’ screamed the Zimbabwean attack-gang assaulting 3 Afrikaner visitors in Gaborone…
