Libyan Airbus crashes in Tripoli from Joburg

Dutch child the only survivor of crashed Afriqiyah Airways Airbus – which “exploded and disintegrated” on landing at Tripoli from Johannesburg, South Africa at 6am

Tripoli – News 24 reports that a very lucky 8-year-old Dutch child reportedly was the sole survivor after a brand-new Airbus belonging to a Libyan-government owned low-cost airline, arriving from South Africa, “exploded and disintegrated” on landing at Tripoli airport at around 6am on Wednesday, killing “more than 100 people”, Libyan officials said. Afriqiyah Airways listed 104 people on board: 93 passengers and 11 Libyan crew members – on its flight 8U771 from Johannesburg . The Libyans are blaming it on ‘the weather’ even though European news reported that while the weather at 6am was overcast, the visibility was 2km.
The Dutch news media reported that its foreign affairs ministry has also confirmed that at least 61 of the dead passengers were Dutch citizens and Afrikaans-language newspaper Beeld reports that nine South Africans also died on the flight. Initially the Dutch had reported more citizens – but this error was due to the ‘Dutch-language’ surnames of the South African passengers, it was reported in the Dutch news media.
- The Dutch flag flew at half-mast from all Dutch government buildings shortly after the announcement and the parliamentarians – who are in the middle of an election campaign – also called off their campaigning as the country was being plunged into mourning. The South African authorities have thus far remained silent about the crash.
The Dutch government was preparing to dispatch an emergency rescue team on a special flight to Tripoli to bring the surviving child and the bodies back to the Netherlands as quickly as possible.

From all accounts it is clear that this regular low-cost flight of the Libyan-government owned airline from Johannesburg obviously was primarily filled up with Westerners. The Arabian news reports are reporting much more about the crash than the Libyan news media, reports the Dutch news media.
Explosion and fire:
The Libyan government also hastened to publish reassurances that the crash ‘was not due to any terrorism’ even though the official investigation into the causes of the crash had not yet been launched, with international flight-investigators still enroute from France and other Western countries. The Libyan authorities very carefully shielded any foreign news TV cameras from filming the entire crash scene – only allowing the State-run Libyan news media to film certain scenes which only showed small portions of the debris-field. The wreckage showed however that it was obvious that it exploded into many small pieces but that the tyres were still intact. Some middle-eastern media also reported that there had been an ‘explosion’ just as the plane touched down just after 6am. The manufacturers of the AIRBUS also hastened to report that the plane had only been in servicve for six months.
"I can confirm the crash but not the number of the dead," said Bongani Sithole, an official of the Libya-owned airline at Johannesburg airport. "We hear that it happened one metre away from the runway."
A Libyan security official earlier told AFP that all those on board the Airbus A330 had died -- but an airport official said in fact a Dutch boy (or girl?) had survived and been rushed to hospital near Tripoli. There was no immediate indication of the cause of the crash, which occurred as the Afriqiyah Airways plane was landing after a flight from Johannesburg at around 06:00 (04:00 GMT). The doctor who showed the news media scenes of the little child referred to the youngster as a ‘she’.
"It exploded on landing and totally disintegrated," the security official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. The crew members were all Libyan nationals, the official added.

Dutch blogger A van Mullekom wrote on “Vliegervaringen.com’ - a Dutch website which keeps keeps close watch on the efficiency of international airlines -- that after a return flight between Duesseldorf Germanny and Johannesburg with a stopover in Tripoli, he will never fly Afriqiyah Airways again -- and advises against anyone else doing so. He had flown on April 12 2010 on flight 8U770 from Duesseldorf Germany to Johannesburg international airport in a one of their airbuses and returned on 27 April 2010 on flight 8U771 and wrote:
- “I have almost no words for the way in which we were maltreated during the delay but I will try: no information provided, not being taken seriously, not one facility provided to us, food and drink only provided after long and determined requests, rude behaviour by staff. And upon our return trip on 27 April 2010 from Johannesburg, an Afriqiyah worker excelled in negativity, with commanding behaviour, creating chaotic check-in procedures, giving confusing advice to the long queues waiting to be checked in…. And during the transfer in Tripoli it was the same story. Also, the toilet facilities at Tripoli airport are disgusting. I- also wrote: I also took this flight to Johannesburg. Tripoli is not suitable for a transfer and most certainly not for Westerners. I wasn’t prepared for such chaos. On the men’s toilets one had a lock but mine didn’t work and from the toilet seat it was evident that people sat on it with their shoes. Afriqiya should do something about the delays and the lack of information. On a Western flight one would get an overnight stay in a hotel but nothing was done for us and when the plane has mechanical problems Afriqiyah cannot deal with it. Good weather conditions:
An AFP correspondent said the crash site had been sealed off by security officials and ambulances and emergency vehicles were seen rushing between the airport and the capital, about 50km apart. The wreckage could be seen in the distance but no plumes of smoke were evident. Weather conditions were good at Tripoli on Wednesday morning, with only light clouds in the sky.
Afriqiyah Airways said on its website that it operates an Airbus fleet. It started operations with five leased planes and signed a contract with Airbus at an exhibition in Paris in 2007 for the purchase of 11 new planes, the website said.The airline, founded in April 2001, initially was launched with full funding from the first Libyan state. The “company”'s capital was later divided into shares to be managed by the Libya-Africa Investment Portfolio. On April 21, the airline announced that flights were back to normal after disruptions due to the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland that grounded flights in Europe last month.Last June, a 12-year-old girl was the sole survivor of a Yemeni plane crash off the Comoros.

What right-wing plot?
Radio Pretoria, the only independent Afrikaans-language broadcaster in Africa, tried hard to find out exactly which right-wing groups were involved in the ANC-claimed ‘plot to bomb Soweto’ – but only found a few people without any political ties had been temporarily detained for not turning in their legally-registered guns…
Radio Pretoria comments: “Last week it was blasted from every poster in the streets: “Rightwing plot thwarted, bomb-planters arrested… ‘The ANC’s His Master’s Voice, the SA broadcasting corportion made it the main-news on all its bulletons. Finally. Everyone had expected some kind of reprisal for the gruesome murder on Mr Eugene Terre’Blanche: at last the so-called far-right was going to make trouble because everyone knows that the Boer Nation is angry as hell. They had been quiet for far too long, no-one had undertaken any stupid things in any coordinated way.
“The iron disclipline amongs the Boer Nation not to retaliate apparently also is a thorn in the eye of the ANC-regime, perhaps even a source of some unknown fear. Something simply had to happen – and if it didn’t happen it would just have to be helped along a bit…
We (at Radio Pretoria) also investigated -- and found that the Verkenners (Scouts) movement’s investigation to be correct: they had also found that this latest announcement was just another ploy to sweep up some sort of revolution within the ANC’s currently raging revolution.
“The ANC police minister announced the so-called arrests of the far-right members in front of the parliamentary portfolio committee – to his own ANC-revolution chums in other words.
“With more than fifty daily murders, law and order no longer exist and he needed a lightning-conductor to keep his revolutionary pals satisfied. They have all learned over the past sixteen years under ANC-suppression that nothing works as well as to create some kind of rightwing'- or ‘white danger’: this immediately diverts away the attention from all other matters at hand.
The same week of Mr Eugene Terre’Blanche ‘s murder, His Masters’ Voice also announced that they were searching for a white double-cabbed bakkie somewhere in the Eastern Transvaal from which shots were fired at a minibus-taxi. And that was the last anyone also heard about this particular subject.
Now they’ve apparently come across some kind of rightwing plot to test explosives in black townships. Even Little Red Riding Hood probably wouldn’t have swallowed that particular fairytale. And there are widespread guesses as to the number of people arrested and from which organisation.
Radio Pretoria has tried with all its might, to find out which organisation could have been involved, who could have been arrested – but all our searches have led to nothing, probably because it was a fairy-tale.
What we did find however is that by coincidence, on the same weekend when Mr Terre’Blanche was murdered, the police carried out some raids on people who owned ‘illegal weapons’ and had failed to hand them in during the SAPS guns-amnesty. Some people apparently were arrested but this had nothing to do with a far-rightwing plot and nobody was involved in carrying out any kind of attempt to overthrow the State.
Apparently the police minister used these arrests to make himself look more capable than he is, as if he had now uncovered a formidable plot. Apparently he is thus trying to scare our compatriots away from attempts to create self-defence units to protect themselves from attacks.
The minister should know this: our people have shaken off our fears. It will take a lot more than some fables to scare the nation again. They went to the Ventersdorp magistrate’s court in their thousands – despite threats from the police minister that they would be arrested. And they went in their many tens of thousands to the funeral in Ventersdorp – despite threats by Cosatu that they would be holding a large counter-demonstration just a stonethrow away. And since that time the ‘volk’ shows up in their many thousands at public meetings to get involved in self-defence security networks, and with groups which work to realise the Republican freedoms for our (Boer) nation.
The spirit of our nationalism is awakening – just like it is rising worldwide. One can’t imprison this quest and it is fearless. That spirit lives amongst us now and is stronger than ever – and will only come to rest once we have our own free (Boer) republic.
Meanwhile we aren’t going to be taken in by publicity ploys and intimidation by the ANC-regime.”
