J.J. Strydom, 30, escapes at high speed from hail of bullets in Mamelodi, Pretoria

2010-06-23 PRETORIA. Vehicle-evaluator J J Strydom shows where a hijacker's bullet hit his GPS before going through his windscreen during an attack in Mamelodi. (Wayne Coetzee, Beeld) Virginia Keppler, Beeld. Strydom’s father and brother have also been in several hijackings and armed robberies over the past year – and all three men have thus far survived…   http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/Man-escapes-hijackers-shots-20100622

Strydom JJ vehicle evaluator Mamelodi attack June 22 2010 Beeld Wayne Coetzee pic Strydom, who lives at the Rietfontein smallholdings near Pretoria escaped a bullet to the head on Monday afternoon when he slapped away a hijacker's firearm and raced off in his bakkie. The shot was fired and the bullet, which would probably have hit Strydom in the head, hit his GPS before going through the windscreen of his double-cab Ford Ranger.

He then raced out of Mamelodi, in the east of Pretoria, under a hail of bullets, so he wouldn't be shot "to smithereens".

Strydom had been in  the black township  to evaluate a vehicle when he was accosted by the gunman in the middle of the day at about 14:30.

Pistol to head
He says he was attacked when he stopped at a stop sign somewhere in the east of the suburb."My bakkie's window was open, and the next minute someone was pressing a pistol against my head and tried to open my door.

"At first I kept my hands in the air, but while he was struggling with the door, I slapped away his hand holding the firearm, and the shot went off. Luckily my bakkie was in first gear and I could pull away immediately. More shots were fired behind me, but I kept driving until I reached the old Cullinan Road, east of Pretoria. There I saw that two more bullets had hit my bakkie - on the right back door and through the tailgate.”

  • He drove straight home. The badly-shaken Afrikaner registered his formal complaint at the Moot police station on Tuesday. "I got a huge fright, but I'm just happy to be okay."

This wasn't the first time he and his family members have had to deal with hijackers. "In 2004 I was hijacked in Mamelodi, and the hijackers pistol-whipped me against the back of my head before they stole my cellphone, belt, watch, all my personal belongings and my car. Then they dropped me off between shacks in Mamelodi."

His father, Johan Strydom snr, 64, was hit over the head and hijacked in Nelspruit four months ago. Strydom jnr's brother 32-year-old Jaco, was hijacked in Hatfield in October last year. "They also forced him to withdraw money from his account and drove around with him in the boot before throwing him out and disappearing with his BMW."

A French tourist writes about his WC2010 experience:

"Just returned. Francois  (France) - 11:51AM Friday, 25 Jun 2010
My 4 European friends were robbed and raped in most brutal fashion close to Rustenburg and then again insulted by local Police who blamed them for not having been careful. They were ridiculed and 2 girls had to go on retro-viral medications. Anyone on this site claiming SA is safe is as far I am concerned a Propaganda writer hired by either the ANC or FIFA. That you would toy with tourists lives like that is pathetic and sickening. Your country has become a disgraceful increasingly 3rd world joke. We will never forgive FIFAs BS safety propaganda nor forgive the safety crap you spewed before we arrived there. We hope FIFA gets its derierre sued for playing with people lives.Bon voyage to anyone stupid enough to still visit your crime infested, corrupt and racist country. All we experienced was trauma worth a lifetime. Thanks to the writer of you story to tell your experience. We wish we would have known all this before going".

People with lung-diseases should not blow on the vuvuzela

2010-06-25  The Department of Health in South Africa warned yesterday that ‘people who are ill should not blow on the vuvuzela or share it with others. The Department issued the warning after investigating whether infectious diseases such as Tuberculosis could be spread more rapidly through use of the vuvuzela at stadiums.

Beeld interviewed eye- nose and throat specialist Dr Chris Smit – who said while no proper research has yet been conducted on whether the vuvuzela can spread infectious diseases – it’s entirely possible that diseases such as Tuberculosis (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) could be spread – it would ‘rain in aerosol form on bystanders and they can in turn breathe it in, by an infected person who blows on a vuvuzela.  He wrote in a letter to Beeld newspaper that especially after sunset, this infectious bacterium spreads much easier. He warned that anyone who attended matches and start developing symptoms – months, even years later – including chronic coughing, weight loss, night-sweats and lymph-node enlargements, must consider the possibility that they were infected with Tuberculosis at a football-match

His warning he said, was issued specifically to tourists who are unaware of the very high infection rate of Tuberculosis in South Africa. He thus contradicts the recent statement by the country’s National Institute for Infectious Diseases, NIOS, which wrote on its recent report that ‘the chances of spreading infectious diseases during the WC2010 could also be done by people who shout, scream, curse or sing – and also spread aerosol droplets into the air. http://www.beeld.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/Siekes-moet-liefs-nie-vuvus-blaas-20100625
