Seven farm attacks since May 22: one killed
Summary: one elderly smallholder, Mrs Johanna Magrietha Smit, 76, was murdered after returning from church on July 4 in Witpoort, Wolmaransstad; there have been seven farm attacks since May 22 in North West and around greater Pretoria; and three on-duty, one ex-SAPS members were arrested for their role in two thwarted farm-attacks in Schweizer-Reneke, North West…
Armed attacks have increased warns the leader of Donkerhoek scouts movement near Pretoria:
July 7 2010 - Jan Beyers, the chairman of the "Verkenners' (scouts) movement in Donkerhoek near Pretoria said that their self-defence units have fought off three farm attack gangs since July 3 in Pienaarspoort region east of Pretoria.Shots were fired during the attacks, which were successfully warded off by the Donkerhoek Verkenners self-defence units. The good news is that no-one was injured, although shots were fired in each of the three attacks'. The community was on guard and able to rush to the aid of the attacked smallholders very quickly." He also warned that 'claims in the news media that farm attacks had lessened, are inaccurate - they are just not reported in the news media,' he said. "The SAPS' blatant incompetence to arrest these attackers in Donkerhoek is the cause of much concern. In one case, a police helicopter had even been spotted overhead, we learned later that the helicopter was enroute to another attack in Silverton. Oddly too is the fact that the attack in Silverton nor the three attacks in Pienaarspoort were mentioned in any way in the mainstream news media. The impression is definitely created that the news media has decided not to publish any 'negative publicity' during the World Cup 2010. If this is an accurate assessment, it is truly shocking that the news media now has become such a willing pawn in the ANC regime's propaganda campaign'.
He added: "We warn our compatriots not to believe the media claims that there has been a reduction in farm attacks. The Verkenners also received a written alert from another community-security body that indeed the farm attacks have increased since the start of the WC2010. We should all also take these widespread warnings of organised xenophobic attack plans very seriously because the wave of attacks in the farming areas definitely is also increasing. The Donkerhoek Verkenners can state this categorically from our first-hand experience in having to fight back against three farm-attack gangs since July 3 in Pienaarspoort alone'. We can also confirm that the SAPS will do little or nothing to protect rural communities. Compatriots are urged to join community-security forums wherever they are to start creating their own self-protection units.Only by standing together, can we remain strong', said Jan Beyers, cellphone 084 512 9035
NW landowner Johanna Smit, 76, murdered, Witpoort, Womaransstad
July 7 2010 – In the third farm-attack in North West Province since May 22, landowner Mrs Johanna Magrietha Smit, 76, was murdered just after returning from church on July 4 2010 at her smallholding at Witpoort, in the Wolmaransstad district. Nothing was robbed, reports Mark van Zyl, the murdered woman’s son-in-law. He and his wife Rietha, the daughter of the murdered woman, live in Kentucky in the USA.
Transvaal Agricultural Union spokesman Henk van der Graaf, has also confirmed the murder, through the local agricultural community in Wolmaransstad. He commented that he was puzzled as to why the news wasn’t being published in the main-stream news media nor confirmed by the SA Police. He had provided the information to Radio Pretoria, which had broadcast his interview on July 7 2010 – but did not list the murder as one of their daily news items. Henk vd Graaf: koms@tlu.co.za
Police involvement in NW farm attacks:
Mrs Smit was murdered on the same day when a farm attack targetting handicapped Schweizer-Reneke farmer Toby Van den Heever, 80, was thwarted by two employees. Thus far three on-duty SAPS officers have been arrested for two thwarted farm-attacks in North West province, which were carried out on May 22 and July 4. (report below).
- All three attacks targetted elderly land-owners in North West province. http://censorbugbear-reports.blogspot.com/2010/07/another-schweizer-reneke-farm-attack.html
- Other SAPS police officers also arrested for ethnocidal attacks: http://censorbugbear-reports.blogspot.com/2010/06/saps-members-arrested-for-ethnocidal.html
Mrs Smit was killed inside her own homestead at Witpoort, which is located between Leeudoringstad and Wolmaransstad, in North West province.
“The cause of death is believed to be strangulation’, writes her son-in-law Mr van Zyl, who is flying to South Africa to attend her funeral this week. “My mother in law was the most amicable senior lady and widow, aged 76. She never killed an animal in her life and also was proud of the fact that she never touched a gun in her life. On Sunday 4 July 2010, after returning from church in Wolmaransstad, she was surprised by killers who took her inside the house, tied her to a chair and pulled plastic bags over her head. This is how a family friend found her little frail body. Nothing was stolen only one thing was taken...her life. “
33 violence-related deaths in Wolmaransstad in bookyear 2008/9
In the last available SAPS crime statistics for this district from March 2008 to March 2009, a total twelve murders plus 21 culpible homicides were recorded that year, i.e. a total of 33 violence-related deaths.
Three cops, one ex-cop arrested in two thwarted farm attacks in NW: On July 4 - on the same day when Mrs Van Zyl was murdered – the farm of 80-year-old Toby Van den Heever, located in the Schweizer-Reneke district of North West, also was attacked: in this attack an SAPS-officer from the Amalia police station was arrested shortly thereafter by police who responded to the emergency call; and two hero farmworkers, Abraham Sesing and Hendrik Eksteen (pictured below) -- who had moved into the homestead twop months earlier to help protect the frail, handicapped 80-year-old farmer -- had also shot at and injured another of the four armed male attackers while they were tearing down the homestead’s security door. A total of 3 SAPS officers and one ex-cop now are in custody for involvement in these two thwarted farm attacks in Schweizer-Reneke: on May 22 and July 4…
SA Police officer from Amalia police station was driving the getaway car…
The arrested Amalia-SAPS member, 36, was allegedly driving the get-away-car. He was remanded into police custody during a court appearance on July 5, said SAPS Captain Aafje Botma, the spokeswoman for the SAPS in North West. She said the arrested cop’s service pistol has been confiscated – and an internal enquiry will be lodged. Three other suspects are still missing.
Gloria Edwards of Beeld newspaper also reported that during the previous attack against the farm of Abraham Oosthuizen on May 22 2010, several police officers from Roodepoort and Randfontein were also arrested when the local farm-watch members descended on the farm in large numbers. The Van den Heever farm is located halfway between Schweizer-Reneke en Delareyville.
- SAPS constable Rebecca Mfisa arrested for farm-attack, Schweizer-Reneke
- The female constable was arrested in a road-block while driving away from the crime scene – 333km from her duty station in Roodepoort/Florida. Two other suspects appeared with her, namely Mr Modisaotsile Advocate Koki, 37, and ex-police officer Mr Thembila Johannes Rens, 35 – the latter is believed to be a in a relationship with Mfisa. The fourth suspect was still being sought, reports SAPA. Police searching Mfisa’s bakkie discovered her police identification, a police-issue gun, apolice-issue torch, an orange emergency light and two-way hand radios in the vehicle.

Workers had moved into homestead to protect Mr Van den Heever:
The farmer’s granddaughter Mildred Veldman, 29, said Sesing and the Eksteen family had moved into the Van den Heever homestead ‘to protect him and to help him. My granddad lost a leg about six months ago and has to use a wheelchair,’ she said. “Abraham and Tokolosh are heroes. I can only imagine what could have happened if they hadn’t stopped the attackers.’
Police later also arrested a police officer after the police obtained information that a “specific white car” had been used to transport the farm-attack gang. The policeman was arrested very close to the farm in a white Toyota Avanza car shortly after the attack. NW police spokeswoman Captain Aafje Botma said this arrested man’s SAPS pistol was confiscated and he’s being investigated internally for his role in this attack. The three other suspects are still missing,’
- “When the hatespeech stops, the farm-attacks stop…”
- Agri-SA ‘s national security committee chairman said he ‘wasn’t aware of any other farm attack since the start of the World Cup 2010. “During the World Cup politicians seem to be holding back on their hate-inciting statements against farmers. However while one can never prove the links between chants such as ‘Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer’ and farm attacks, it’s also becoming rather obvious that before the WC2010, farm attacks were taking place at the rate of twice a day in South Africa. During the WC2010, these have dropped to nearly none at all…’ http://www.beeld.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/Werkers-keer-plaasaanval-20100704
SAPS constable Rebecca Mfisa arrested for May 22 2010 farm-attack, Schweizer-Reneke
Johannesburg – May 22 2010 - SAPS Constable Rebecca Mfisa of the SAPS Crime Prevention Unit in Florida/Roodepoort, Gauteng was arrested and appeared in court for the attempted murder of Schweizer-Reneke farmer Abraham Oosthuizen, 36, on Friday. May 22 2010. She was remanded to May 31 for a formal bail application with two other suspects in the North West magistrate’s court on Monday and is being investigated for an attempted murder charge, North West police Lt-Gen. Lesetja Ephraim Beetha told the news media.
The female constable was arrested in a road-block while driving away from the crime scene – which is 333km from her duty station in Florida. Two other suspects appeared with her, namely Mr Modisaotsile Advocate Koki, 37, and ex-police officer Mr Thembila Johannes Rens, 35 – the latter is believed to be a in a relationship with Mfisa. The fourth suspect is still being sought, reports SAPA.
Mr Oosthuizen was attacked and fired upon at his car-port next to his homestead at about 20h00 Friday. The attackers fled after Oosthuizen fired off a shot and then barricaded himself inside his homestead while alerting the local farm-watch volunteers -- some neighbours arrived on the scene within seven minutes while other farmers organised road-blocks around the farm and launched searches for the attackers. Mfisa was allegedly captured with incriminating materials in a white bakkie, chasing away from the crime-scene at high speed.
Police searching Mfisa’s bakkie discovered her police identification, a police-issue gun, a police-issue torch, an orange emergency light and two-way hand radios in the vehicle. The Democratic Alliance obtained confirmation during a parliamentary question-session that one of the arrested people had also been a police officer. http://www.politicsweb.co.za/politicsweb/view/politicsweb/en/page72308?oid=177721&sn=Marketingweb%20detail
North West farms embroiled in rejected land-claims row:
North West farms are lately targetted more than other regions by organised, armed black gangs. There is-- because there is a fierce battle for control of the land: mainly sparked by the large deposits of a variety of highly valuable minerals such as platinum. Members of the Mekgareng tribe – more specifically the Makuwe-clan, have submitted claims to the Land Claims Court to large portions of North West land. http://www.broederstroomlandclaim.co.za/Court-order-22-02-2010.PDF
Foreign Africans flee SAfrica over xenophobia threats
Foreign Africans fleeing Du Noon near Milnerton, Mbweni near Paarl, Western Cape …
- South African government claims ‘there’s no proof’ of renewed attack plans…
July 7 2010 – Radio 702 news and The Star newspaper report that many black foreigners , especially Zimbabweans, are now packing their belongings and fleeing from the Western Cape. They fear new xenophobic attacks: Du Noon in Milnerton has the greatest exodus: it also was the epicentre of the organised attacks by black racists in 2008, when some 20,000 African immigrants were chased out of the Western Cape alone by black South African ‘jackrolling’ gangs… and many hundreds-of-thousands of foreign Africans fled from South Africa into Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique and Namibia and had to be put up at internal-refugee camps by the UN Refugee agency.
The Star’s journalist Chad Cupido chad.cupido@inl.co.za reports that ‘scores of Zimbabwean refugees are desperately trying to return home despite assurances from the city council that the threat of an outbreak of xenophobic violence after the World Cup is simply a rumour.” However the Zimbabweans who are fleeing all say that they are receiving many death-threats – they clearly don’t believe these are merely rumours:
Reason Wandi of Zimbabwe says he was thrown from a train and cursed for a foreigner – police deny it:
And journalist Michelle Pietersen reported from Khayelitsha that ‘as tens of thousands of foreign football fans lap up Cape Town's hospitality, a Zimbabwean living in a township just outside the city since 2006 is in hospital fearing for his life, branded a makwerekwere (foreigner) and thrown from a moving train. His ankles were fractured and he hit his head when he landed on a platform and he’s in hospital.. But police say Reason Wandi, 27, “fell from the train and did not open a casel… Wandi said he witnessed the devastating xenophobic attacks of 2008 in Khayelitsha and now feared that, if South Africans made good on their alleged threat against Africans from other countries who refused to return home after the World Cup, he feared he might not survive a second outbreak.http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=15&art_id=vn20100707044745699C544609
Meanwhile Chad Cupido also reports from Cape Town near the Huguenot Tunnel: “On Tuesday least 50 Zimbabweans sat silently on a stretch of grass next to the N1 tollgate at the Huguenot Tunnel, waiting in the hope that a vehicle would stop so that they could obtain a lift.On Wednesday, for the third consecutive day, a group of mainly Zimbabweans plan to wait at the Huguenot tollgate to try to get a lift out of Cape Town. With blank expressions they sat between their belongings, including mounds of clothes and blankets. One man even had a bed he wanted to take with him.”
Numerous death-threats:
"We don't feel safe in this country. We (Zimbabweans ) have received many death threats and it is obvious we are not welcome, so we will rather go home to our families where we can live in peace and dignity," said John Smith, 40, a Zimbabwean who has lived in Khayelitsha for two years. He said a local person had threatened him with death last week, but he had received numerous threats since the World Cup started. "I am disgusted at the behaviour and negative attitude shown towards foreigners and I will never return to this hellhole which you people (South Africans) call a democracy," Smith said. Another Zimbabwean, Valentine Johns, who had also stayed in Khayelitsha but was trying to return to Zimbabwe because of all the threats he received, said he had initially left his homeland because of political problems and the declining economy under Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF rule. Johns said he had left Zimbabwe to get away from Mugabe, but now believed it was better to die at home than to be burnt to death in a foreign country.
- "When I arrived I was expecting employment and friendly people. Instead I got no employment and constant threats of being killed. I had no idea life would be this risky," he said.
In June the South African cabinet re-established an inter-ministerial committee, headed by Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa, to investigate threats against foreigners and attacks on them. On Tuesday Mthethwa's spokesman, Zweli Mnisi, said the committee planned to meet tomorrow morning. He said the media would be briefed on the outcome of the meeting.
Cape Town mayoral committee member for safety and security J P Smith said on Tuesday that while the city “was ready to react should violence break out”, he had not heard of any attacks against foreigners so far, nor seen "blatant evidence" that violence was occurring or would occur. Smith said that through reporting, the media was generating panic about possible violence. In June the army was deployed to Du Noon in an operation residents said had to do with persistent rumours of xenophobic violence.chad.cupido@inl.co.za http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=13&art_id=vn20100707044701838C443668
Bloekombos squatter camp - four males arrested: were paid and given guns to kill Somali shopkeepers:
However at the Bloekombos informal settlement, four males aged from 16 to 26 were arrested for ‘allegedly accepting cash and tik (drugs) bribes to kill Somali shopkeepers. Bloekombos Somali teenager Mohamed Husen, 19, said his 17-year-old brother had been shot in their shop over two weeks ago.
The Bloekombos suspects were accused of taking money and drugs ‘from jealous local businessmen who wanted the rival Smali store owners out of this area’, reported IOL journalist Tsego Lepute on June 29 2010. “The young men were allegedly given guns, money and drugs to kill the Somali shopkeepers and burn their shops’. Monica Fritz, 55, told the journalist that one of the arrested men, Terrance Fritz, 26, was her newphew. Fritz said she had heard Terrance and other young men were paid between R60 and R100 and given tik straws and a gun to kill or burn foreign-owned shops."From what I hear, the boys would be sent out with the guns which were later taken back after the mission was completed," she said.Fritz, who raised Terrance, said the whole community had been talking about the Somali attacks months before they started."People talk in our area and a few weeks before this thing began, there was a rumour that xenophobic attacks were going to come back," she said."I heard Somali shopkeepers were being told to go back to their countries if they didn't want to get hurt.
"What I don't understand is why these people used our children to kill."
