List of murdered rural dwellers in Western and Southern Cape

Amidst increasing armed attacks targetting Cape smallholdings, rural lodges and farms, an Aberdeen farmer and his son were arrested for ‘murder’ – after they had shot dead a suspected burglar… There is a widespread perception that Cape farms get off scott-free in the farm-attack epidemic – however this is not an accurate assessment of the facts.

-----------------------------

July 22 2010 -  Lavern de Vries, crime writer, writes that an unnamed Southern Cape farmer and his son have been charged with murder after an armed man suspected of burgling their farm was shot dead. Preliminary reports revealed that he was shot with a shotgun and a rifle. The case, considered "high profile", has been handed over to the Hawks unit to investigate. Police said the 58-year-old farmer had taken his workers to Aberdeen at about 5.30pm on Saturday. When he returned to the farm about 68km south-east of Beaufort West on the Aberdeen road, he became suspicious because a light was on inside his homestead, the house was ransancked and a window forced. He phoned his son, who rushed to his father's aid.

While they were having coffee in the kitchen, they saw the shadow of a suspicious person outside. They then switched off the light but noticed that the suspect was pointing a gun at them, according to police. He said that the pair then ran to arm themselves and allegedly shot at the man with a shotgun and a rifle. Police have been unable to identify the alleged intruder. Both the farmer and his 29-year-old son have been charged with “murder” -- but were released after consultation with the prosecuting authority, pending the outcome of the forensic and ballistic analysis. The farmer, meanwhile, registered a case of housebreaking.

Carl Opperman, chief executive of Agri WesCape, said farmers were "sitting ducks" because of their isolated situation.  Opperman also explained that the Western Cape’s smaller, high-occupancy farms (thus having a higher level of social control) did have a “relatively low incident level compared to provinces further north,  where grain farms were larger and posed a bigger security risk.”

  • We list the details of some 70 people who were murdered at rural sites in the Western Cape over the past few years -  below this article.

Roche was unable to raise any SAPS members at the local station because the Police commissioner was throwing a bash at Bloemfontein stadium for 50,000 police officers – which had left many rural police stations unmanned.

On May 16 2008 Delareyville farmer Jaco Swart also was arrested and thrown in a police cell overnight after defending himself against a  large group of armed farm attackers  -- and during which one attacker was shot dead during the firefight on May 16 2008.

These recorded events prompted worried Bellville Western Cape dad Gideon Theron to resort to physically guarding the police-cell where his daughter Tonia, 16, had been locked up on trumped-up charges at the Bellville Police station February 10 2009. She also was released the next day without any charges being lodged against her. He stood in front of her celldoor all night.

8 murders on Philippi farms linked to one murder gang whose leader has a “Jesus” tattoo:

In 2005, farmers in the Philippi area near Khyalitsha township also rushed to beef up their security in the wake of a spurt of motiveless killings by an armed gang of three men which targetted farmworkers. Farmworkers were convinced that the eight murders committed in the area recently were linked. The three suspects - led by a man marked by a "Jesus" tattoo - made use of the same kind of murder weapon. Farmer Errol Ohlhoff, owner of a nursery where two workers were murdered,  said he'd appointed a security guard to safeguard his employees. "Up to three families are sharing a house at night because they fear for their lives. The police should do more to make us safe. It's their job," said Ohlhoff. Gunter Engelke, of Engelke flower farm, had also appointed two security guards on his grounds. Deez, Jakobus Roman, went missing July 3 2010 Linquenda Farm, Villiersdorp, found chopped to pieces in suspected muti-murder

July 23 2010 the small farming community of Villiersdorp in the Western Cape is in shock after the body of a missing farm worker, Jakobus Deez, nicknamed “Roman’, was found with his head, arms and penis hacked off. Police say farm workers came upon the mutilated body in a ditch on Linquenda Farm, outside Villiersdorp, at about 9am on Wednesday.Villiersdorp Police Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Adri Kriel said it was suspected that the body is that of Jakobus "Roman" Deez, 32, who went missing on July 3.Relatives of the missing man identified the body by the clothes that were found next to him, but we are waiting on the results of DNA tests to confirm the deceased's identity," said Kriel. He explained that the body couldn't be positively identified because the head and both arms were hacked off and are still missing. The man's upper body was also slit open and some of his intestines were removed and his penis was also cut off.But despite the gruesome injuries, there was very little blood on the scene, leading police to believe that the deceased had been murdered somewhere else and then dumped in the ditch.Jakobus's family believe that it is his body and are struggling to come to terms with his brutal death. His wife Gillian Deez, 37, said she got the shock of her life when cops came to her door asking her whether she could identify the clothes that were found near the body. She said that although she had reported her husband missing, when he didn't come home after police arrested him on July 3 for being drunk in public, she assumed that he found work on another farm and was going to return home soon."Last Friday was our seven-month anniversary and I thought he was going to come home that night to surprise me," she said. She now hopes police will find her husband's missing body parts in time for his funeral next week.Constance Deez, 45, said the thought of burying her brother without his head and other body parts is too much to bear."But I guess we just have to thank God that his body was found so that we don't have to keep wondering where he is," she added. His daughter Jacqueline Andreas, 13, said she had had a feeling her dad was dead.Anyone with information can contact Officer Hendrik Wilmot on 028 840 8000 or on 079 893 9915. - Daily Mail http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?from=rss_Crime%20And%20Courts&set_id=1&click_id=15&art_id=iol1279877957379D121

Following are the recorded violent rural deaths for the Western and Southern Cape region

Sapphire, Beverley, hostess, murdered 2010-04-21 Lookout Deck rural overlook Plettenberg Bay, Cape
Lookout Restaurant Coowner Shot Dead Plettenberg Bay April 21 2010 ZA21 April 2010 - PLETTENBERG BAY, GARDEN ROUTE. Die Burger newspaper reports that Beverley Sapphire, the hostess of the Lookout Deck restaurant in the popular tourist resort of Plettenberg Bay along the Garden Route has been shot dead during an attack by an armed group of men. It’s not certain whether anything was stolen. Plettenberg Bay is one of South Africa's premier tourist destinations with ‘seriously rich” people flying there for their holidays – even flying in their maids to holiday with them. The SAPS  has confirmed that the attack was carried out against the world-famous rural restaurant Lookout Deck, which has one of the world’s most stunning views of the Indian Ocean and a popular spot for whale- and dolphin waters. The 46-year-old woman was shot in the chest and died on the scene. The SAPS also said they ‘didn’t know if anything had been robbed’, but they are referring to it as an ‘armed robbery’.The owners’ names are listed as Chris and Pippa Stroebel on their website, however the name of the murdered woman has not yet been released officially to the news media. http://www.lookout.co.za/contact-us.html .http://www.dieburger.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/Plettenbergbaai-restaurant-roof-Vrou-doodgeskiet-20100422 http://www.helloplett.co.za/publication.asp?context=latest&ShowIssue=true#hp
