Thirty-five-year-old Mrs Riana Schoeman was shot dead in front of her two small boys while she was fighting to stop armed attackers from coming into her Brandbach homestead. Shots were fired through the door she was pushing against – killing her instantly, writes Hilda Fourie of Beeld. When Mrs Schoeman fell back, the attackers stormed across her body towards her little sons Martin, 6 and Johan, 4, demanding that children hand over the ‘money and bank cards’. The murderers then rifled through Mrs Schoeman’s pockets, stole some cash and her laptop computer before fleeing.
When their dad, Deon Schoeman (44) arrived home from work on Thursday night, he was greeted by his little sons, who stepped across their dead mother’s body and rushed towards him, saying that “Mamma is geskiet’. (Mommy has been shot).
Mrs Schoeman would have turned 36 years old next month. She was the systems-manager at the Nkunzi Milky Way dairy. The husband is devastated and distraught, asking the journalist: “What kind of human being shoots dead a woman in front of her little children? It’s horrific to me that they have seen and experienced everything. My children saw it all. I hope I will be able to raise them to become the kind of fine person their mother had been. And that they will get over this.’ He had arrived home as usual at around 18:30 vfrom his job. He drove past their homestead and noticed that the lights were off but did not suspect anything untowards, he said. Earlier, he had tried to rech his wife my cellphone but the phone did not ring. He parked in front of his parents’ house across their own homestead. as usual.“Just as I stopped the car, the little ones came running from the front door, and said ‘Mamma is geskiet.’ The oldest one was covered in blood. I stormed into the house and found her behind the front door. She no longer had a pulse-beat’. He phoned dad Gerhard and the men rushed her to the nearest hospital, but she was certified dead on arrival. He tried to reconstruct the events while talking to the journalist, telling her that he ‘suspected that Riana had arrived with the little ones from the kindergarten and was attacked when she was offloading some items. I believe she managed to push the door closed on them and then shot dead through the glass. I think she must have fought fiercely to keep the children safe. “
He said he couldn’t understand why the attackers demanded money and bank-cards from the children – who didn’t know about such things, and moreover it’s well known amongst their workers that the family does not work with cash at all. “I don’t understand. We don’t work with cash at all and we have good relations with our workers to stop this sort of thing from happening. And then this happens.’ Mr Schoeman took his children for trauma-treatment last night. Violent racist black youths attack girl netball players at Free State university’s intervarsity games with Pretoria U.

Volksblad journalists Pieter Steyn and Mike van Rooyen report that the two universities had to cancel their entire annual event because of these threats and racist violence caused by Young Communist League and the ANC-youth league. The demonstrators from these two groups refer to themselves as the ‘Progressive Youth Alliance’ – and demand that Afrikaners should be banned from the universities because they are ‘racist and refuse to integrate (‘transform’). The girl-athletes were confronted by this mob of violent black youths who stormed onto the court, cursed the Afrikaans girls with racist slogans and pushed placards into their faces.
Late yesterday Free State University rector Prof Jonathan Jansen – whose security staff had failed to stop the black men from attacking the white girls – had obtained an urgent interdict from the Free State high court ordering the black student groups from disrupting the intervarsity games and stop them from destroying university property.
Jansen also ordered the suspension of the entire student council and banned all party-politics on campus. “They have gone one step too far,’ he told the news media. He also postponed indefinitely the election of a new student representative council, which would have taken place later this month. Among the ‘students’ who attacked the netball-players yesterday was SRC-chairman Moses Masitha, the vice-chair Thabiso Letsoara and its member Brandon Bosch. Letsoara saw the cancellation of the intervarsity event as a ‘massive victory. “It was our intention to stop the intervarsity and we won our first battle,’ he gloated. They aren’t going to stop there: he will disrupt the football and rugby games in the same way. He expects to be suspected and doesn’t care. “The PYA is doing all students a favour by our actions. Ronell Mentz Aug 5 2010 - saved her own and daughter’s life: shot towards two gunmen who threatened to shoot her dead inside her Menlo Park home…
MENLOPARK, PRETORIA Aug 7 2010 – Mrs Ronell Mentz, 58, a clinical psychologist, was forced to shoot back at two armed robbers who had threatened to shoot her after they broke into her house and that of her daughter at 1.30am. One of the two fleeing men fell into a pool; was rescued by the SAPS; but then died enroute to hospital. Hilda Fourie of Beeld interviewed the crime victim and SAPS Brooklyn commander Brig André Wiese – who said that the second armed robber was still at large.
“I don’t think I’m a hero,” said Mrs Mentz. “Someone was watching over me. I was just lucky’. She said when her dog Gina growled at 1.30am she turned on the lights, opened her bedroom door and saw two figures: one man with what looked like a flashlight, who shouted at her “I will shoot you’, and another person also was behind him in the hallway. She rushed back to her bedroom, GOT THE REVOLVER FROM HER LOCKED GUN-SAFE, went back to the hallway and when she still saw the two figures, she fired towards them. “After the fourth shot I realised I had to leave because I only had one cartridge left in the gun. I shouted at my daughter Marina, 32, to phone the Brooklyn police station, and ‘a flock op cops’ descended within minutes. The police searched the house and had no difficulty following the house-robbers’ trail: they first found a firearm near Mrs Mentz’ house in the garden, and then a trail of clothes which the men had looted from her house, and which led them to the neighbour’s wall. The police then found one man inside the neighbour’s swimming pool, jumped in, rescued him - but he had died enroute to the hospital in the ambulance. WELKOM. DOORN SMALLHOLDINGS –August 7 2010 - ’A twelve-year-old orphan girl who lives with her grandparents inside their homestead/tuck shop, fought like a tigress against an attack gang on Thursday night – and undoubtedly saved their lives, reports Volksblad journalist Tom de Wet.
The family name is not published to protect the identity of the aunt, who was gang-raped by the attackers. The SAPS and emergency services initially reported that the child had also been raped – however instead she was drugged by the gang after she had put up such a fierce fight.
The girl, her brother, 4 and sister, 2, are now in a place of safety where they are being treated for trauma and her grandparents are in hospital with multiple injuries caused by beatings and panga-attacks. Police have confiscated a powdery substance used to drug the child with.
The family’s hours of hell started on Thursday-evening when at least three men, armed with a firearm, a panga and metal pipes, broke into the family’s grocery shop, which is inside their house. The grandparents pleaded with the attackers to not injure them and the children – but the grandfather was tied up and brutally assaulted, and the grandmother pistol-whipped: SAPS spokesman Capt Stephen Thakeng said that while the attackers were inside the house the aunt, 25, and her friend had arrived from North West and ran right into the gang – the male friend was attacked with a panga and the aunt was forced into a room where she was gang-raped. The girl flew into a rage and assaulted the rapists, trying to drag them off the woman. She was side-handed and also was cut on a hand – but she kept on assaulting the men. The girl fought like a tigress to save her family: dragging her grandfather where he lay in a puddle of blood after he was hacked with a panga – covering up the injured old man with a blanket before she grabbed a kitchen-knife and storming towards the attackers again.
SAPS spokesman Capt Stephen Thakeng, said the gang’s loot – after all this trouble and inflicting so much pain and trauma on the family – was a mere R1,000 (about $80 US) in cash, some cellphones and the grandparent’s older-model car – which wasn’t ‘robbed’ but merely ‘borrowed’ as it was later found abandoned alongside a school in Thabong township by SAPS warrant-officer David Scott from the Free State’s K9 squad.
