WALLMANSTHAL, Kameeldrift, Zuid-Afrika. De honden van de vermoorde Nederlandse immigrant Albertus de Jong, 66, bewaakten zijn lijk drie dagen lang nadat de bejaarde Nederlander met een bijl werd afgeslacht op zijn kleinhoeve in Perdefontein dichtbij Wallmansthal, noord van Pretoria. Hij had geen familie in Zuid-Afrika en emigreerde tijdens de tachtigerjaren.

Virginia Keppler van Beeld dagblad in Pretoria schrijft dat een van zijn twee trouwe, oude honden zijn lijk bewijkte terwijl de andere hond op wacht stond bij de voordeur van zijn woonhuis. Zijn aanvallers hadden zijn lijk onder planten dichtbij het hek gegooid. Zijn huilende vriendin – te bang om haar naam te publiceren – vertelde Keppler dat zij de honden zo aantrof toen zij met twee vrienden op de hoeve onderzoek onderstelde - nadat De Jong niet opdaagde voor zijn gebruikelijke Zondagmiddag-maaltijd bij haar woning in Pretoria.
“Ik had hem gebeld maar kreeg geen reactie. Ik sprak nog Donderdag met hem.’ Het drietal zag dat het hek van de kleinhoeve openstond en het slot was verdwenen. De voordeur stond open en het was een warboel binnen. “Ze hebben alles gestolen tot zijn vrachtmotortje (‘bakkie” ) toe.” Ze belden de politie en besloten om buiten het boerderijhek de politie in te wachten ‘in geval ze de kleinhoeve niet konden vinden’.
“Toen wij naar het hek liepen zagen wij het lijk van Albertus onder planten. Ze hadden hem met een bijl doodgeslagen. Het bebloede moordwapen lag nog langs hem’. Toen de politie op het misdaadtoneel aankwam, zei een van de onderzoekende agenten: “Jissie maar daar zitten prachtige vingerafdrukken op die bijl…’. De Jong was ongetrouwd en had geen familie in Zuid-Afrika. Hij kwam elke Zondag bij haar eten en was altijd op tijd. Zij heeft zijn trouwe honden naar de Dierenbeschermingvereniging gebracht om ze af te laten maken: de oude, lieve dieren waren altijd bij hem en zij wist dat hij het niet fijn zou vinden om zijn dieren bij vreemden achter te laten.
SAPS constabel Portia Maleka vertelde Beeld dat de ‘gestolen’ bakkie door de politie in de zwarte township Mamelodi dichtbij Pretoria werd gevonden. ,Het was gewoon achtergelaten en dus niet gestolen. HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS AGAINST COMMANDER WILLEM RATTE
At this moment, while you are reading this, a brave SA soldier, Cmndr. Willem Ratte is dying in a South African prison. Completely innocent of any crimes. The SA State arrested him on Oct 1 2010 on a farm where he was teaching unemployable Afrikaans youth a new trade. Four weeks later the State has still not formulated any formal charges against him and even the magistrate demanded to know under what charges Ratte was being held for such a long time.
While the judicial system is still deciding what crime he has actually committed, this man is dying.(article by Boerboel).

The state claims that it is even investigating rumours of ‘possession of child pornography” against Cmdt Willem Ratte (62), an ex-reconnaissance soldier with a small child. (picture below). After he was pressed by the magistrate to ‘at least tell me on what, and why Ratte was arrested’, Mavundla responded with this information.
People in the public gallery audibly caught their breaths when a defiant Mr. Fanie Mavundla, senior prosecutor, made this announcement in the Witbank Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Mavundla also said that when Ratte and nine other men were arrested at the Balmoral Farm Youth Centre in Mpumalanga, a laptop computer, more computers and cellphones were confiscated.
- Adv. Jurg Prinsloo, Senior Councel for Ratte, said Mavundla dit not specify whether the computers actually belonged to his client. In a previous court statement, Ratte had said the police “had stolen goods and he was never given a receipt for these goods to indicate whether they were his.”
- Mavundla was defiant towards the magistrate, saying that “because the accused refuses to apply for bail, according to protocol it is not the duty of the State to explain.” After the magistrate pressed him again, Mavundla then rescinded, explaining “under protest” that Ratte was being charged for the possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of marijuana. However Ratte says that this charge refers to dagga found on a neighbouring farm; that the ‘illegal firearms’ were not his and he had not been aware of them.

The initial charges against Ratte shortly after his arrest were the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and dealing in drugs. The state is also opposing bail because Ratte is allegedly involved with the protection of ships along Somalia against pirates.
- “It is clear that the man has several contacts in high places. If we let him go, he can intimidate witnesses, or disappear,” Mavundla claimed.
Prinsloo explained to Magistrate Du Plooy however that “ the state must make very sure of their case before arresting a man like this. He is protecting people internationally, and yes, he probably does have contacts in high places. That is why the State must make certain of their case.”
Prinsloo told the court that ‘Ratte also said that the dagga (marijuana) under discussion was found on a neighbouring farm’; that the “illegal firearms” were not even his and that the onus was on the State to prove their claims.
