Steve Hofmeyr in triumphant Stop Boer Murders hike…

Print Friendly and PDF

Hugely popular Boer balladeer Steve Hofmeyr and radio DJ Tim Thabete from Ofm-radio went on an  impromptu hitchhike from Bloemfontein to Cape Town on the N1 highway on Friday to raise money to help combat farm-murders.  It became a triumphant victory ride followed by tens of thousands of people via Twitter – and people rushing up to donate money.
StopFarmMurdersHithikersHofmeyrThabetheFeb172011Hofmeyr delivered his STOP FARM MURDERS poster at the gates of the U2 show to protest against lead-singer Bono’s public support of the ANC’s banned, genocidal hatespeech song SHOOT THE BOER.
It became a triumphant ride on the N1 freeway into Cape Town -- with many people rushing to meet the popular, controversial singer along the way from Bloemfontein– and to donate money.
The hiking idea originated from a radio listener who phoned Ofm and challenged Thabethe to hike to Cape Town to attend the U2 concert."The man promised R10 per km," Thabethe said. Then chaos broke out. "Hundreds of people phoned in and offered a lift. Many promised money." According to Thabethe, Ofm contacted Steve at 12:00 and by 13:00 confirmed that he will also be hitchhiking. Hofmeyr told Volksblad that he and Thabethe wanted to focus the attention on farm murders in South Africa. Every person that picked them up contributed automatically to their campaign against farm murders. The stopped in every new town to get a new lift and were followed via Twitter.
Kill the Boer was sung again … during the transport-workers’ strike:
HOFMEYER STEVE STOP FARM MURDERS hitchhiker FEB182011 Steve wrote on his site last night: "I’m hiking to Cape Town with OFM to deliver my STOP FARM MURDERS poster at the gates of the U2 show there. We, excluding Malema and the ANC and those arguing for KILL THE BOER, are on the same page. May I remind you, Bono, Zuma and the farmers, that 'KILL THE BOER' was sung again today during the transportaion-workers' strikes? My question to Bono: how many minority deaths qualify for your attention, sir? Three=thousand victims in 15 years are ENOUGH. Save our farmers!
His parody on U2’s ‘Sunday, Bloody Sunday’:
I can't believe the news today
I can't close my eyes and make it go away
How long, must we sing this song
How long, to kill somebody else's young
Tonight...

the Boere father stands and weeps
Bodies bleeding at his feet
Bono, used to understand the call
Kill the Boer, Bono says yes shoot them all...

Kill the Boer, before Sunday
Kill the Boer, before Sunday
Kill the Boer, before Sunday:
As he sings we lose a few
Many lost, what's another one or two
The trench is dug within our hearts
and mothers, children, brothers, sisters
Torn apart"

‘No excuses Bono… update your African omniscience:’
Steve writes at the conclusion of the hitchhiking event, arriving tired in
Cape Town after delivering his protest-poster:

  • "No excuses Bono. You knew exactly what the question about freedom songs implied. Thus your answer (... ) We would like to offer you a free farm in Limpopo. We give you thirty days before every South African becomes Oliver Cromwell in your Irish eyes. Please sir, update your African omniscience....
