Three black gunmen shot dead art dealer Gerhard Potgieter at home and fled: nothing was robbed
2011-08-02 Art-dealer Gerhard Potgieter, 51, was shot dead in his home in Drie Riviere, Vereeniging, on August 1 2011 at around 19:45 by three black gunmen with balaclavas. Nothing whatsoever was robbed but the news media persist in describing the attackers as 'robbers'. Police are investigating a murder-case.
The family was attacked at around 19:45, said the widow Mrs Elizabeth Potgieter (48). "My husband and I were watching TV when he decided to go to the bedroom for his 'silent time'. Jacques Steenkamp of Beeld newspaper quoted Mrs Potgieter: "I suddenly heard Gerhard scream and saw three armed (black) men hold guns on him'. All three wore balaclavas, each had a handgun. One of the men was constantly trying to rip her rings from her fingers - but she explained they would not budge. "I think they got panicky because Gerhard constantly yelled for help, loudly. I put my hands in the air and told them, 'wait' and tried to calm my husband down but it didn't work.' The Potgieter family's lodger Ms Marieke Redelinghuis, 23, locked herself in a cupboard in her bedroom when she heard the screaming. Mrs Potgieter said her husband then struggled with one attacker for his gun and she grabbed the diversion to try and flee. "It was pitchdark in the house and as I was running towards the back door I heard shots fired behind me. Two men chased me and stopped me from escaping just outside the back door'. "I screamed very loudly and the men then fled across the wall because the gates were locked. I must have screamed for at least five minutes for help'.She went inside and find her husband covered in blood, injured.Neighbours heard her screams and contacted eBlockwatch.co.za - who in turn alerted the police.The emergency paramedics who arrived on the scene to the husband said her husband was shot three times in the upper body. He died at the scene. The couple have three live-in children, Renier (25), René (21) and Anzabeth (18), but were not at home at the time of the attack. SAPS capt Shado Mashobane confirmed that 'a charge of murder is being investigated'.

DAILY ATTACKS, MURDERS OF SOUTH AFRICAN WHITES FROM JANUARY 2010 – JULY 2011
From Jan 1 2011 to July 31 2011, a total of 323 attacks, (lethal and non-lethal), were recorded against white families in Gauteng, 8 In Mpumalanga, 25 in North West, 2 in North-Natal; 8 in South Natal, 689 in the Free State, 11 in the North Cape, 49 in East Cape and 104 in the Western Cape; – also in the rest of Africa: 3 were murdered in Zimbabwe, 2 murdered in Mozambique, 1 murdered in Zambia, 6 murdered in Namibia, and two murdered in Madagascar. Also: an Afrikaans-speaking white South African couple – crew members of a pirated yacht – are held as hostages by Somalian pirates in Mogadishu, Somalia, (where the South African government has an embassy but has made no attempt to get them freed). More than 98% of these attacked individuals and families were Afrikaans-speaking whites, generally referred to by black South Africans as ‘Boers’, as in ‘Shoot the Boer’ and ‘Kill the Boer’…. In only one recorded case, of a homeowner in Linden, Johannesburg, was the arrested attacker a white man; in all the other incidents, the attackers were black Africans. One case has been recorded where a white man is being sought for the racist-murder of a black man: in Naboomspruit.
