Bruno Carvalho, who writes for the Alberton Record, said their newspaper representative arrived at the scene to find striking NUMSA members trying to pull down a factory fence where non-striking workers were trying to carry on with their work as usual. The reporter only managed to take two photographs of the scene before he was surrounded by angry NUMSA members who threatened him a- they were armed with iron bars and sticks – and told him to leave the area immediately.

As the reporter turned to leave the scene he was struck on the top of the head with a stick and stones were thrown in his direction by the workers to intimidate him further.Fortunately, the reporter did not sustain any serious injuries and managed to escape.Numsa is demanding a 13 percent salary increase. Employers in the sector are offering seven percent. The strike started on Monday after the Labour Court's weekend dismissal of an application for an interdict to stop the strike, brought by the Plastic Converters' Association.Several tre unions, representing about 170 000 workers, embarked on a countrywide strike, with a massive protest march in Johannesburg on Monday.
