Edith Boshoff, 8, was killed when her father Glenn Boshoff, of Centurion, fired his handgun through the locked door of his bedroom in their Centurion complex - believing a burglar tried to break in.
Edi, a grade 2 pupil was hit in the head and died in hospital a short time later. The Boshoff family have had several breakins at their gated security complex. The police said Boshoff was woken by the sound of his dogs' frantic barking at around 3.30am. He went to investigate and saw an armed intruder at the foot of the staircase, while a second man was climbing in through a window.
Boshoff screamed to his wife to fetch his gun, ran back into their bedroom, slammed the door and removed his gun from the safe,' said a police spokesman. Alerted by his father's cries, their teenage son Trevor locked himself in his bedroom - but a terrified little Edi ran to her parent's room for reassurance. When her father saw the door handle to the room moving, he fired the fatal shot. SAPS say at least six intruders were busy invading the Boshoff home. They have arrested no-one. The girls'parents and her brother are severely traumatised and the hospital had arranged for them to see a counsellor after the child died at 11am the next morning. Carin Clemons said this was the fourth breakin at the complex. The electric fence around the property was not switched on at this time because there was work in progress. Yet the managed to only grab a handbag from the Boshoff's home before fleeing. The Director of Public Prosecutions will wait until the investigation had been concluded before deciding whether Mr Boshoff will face a culpible homicide charge or not. Sunday Tribune. Parys smallholders Johan van der Merwe and J B Bezuidenhout: dogs poisoned, self-defence shot fired at men trying to break in
May 17 2012 - PARYS, Free State: Parys Gazette reports on May 24 2012: in the latest wave of poisonings in this region, six dogs were poisoned on agricultural smallholdings along the Kopjeskraal Road with Temek (Two-Step). Johanna and Amanda van der Merwe's young boerboel was poisoned, attempts were made to steal their bakkie. Johan saw two men look through the kitchen-window and tried to break into the kitchen: he fired a warning shot and alerted Parys Sekuriteit. And that same night the smallholder J.B. Bezuidenhout, who owns the Welkom kafee, also found that his dog was poisoned.
PARYS: 24 May 2012: DRASTIC INCREASE IN DOG-POISONINGS IN AND AROUND PARYS RESIDENTIAL AREAS AND FARMS:
Above: A wave of dog-poisonings in predominantly (still)primarily white areas of PARYS has residents worried and neighbourhood watch groups are stepping up their security even more. The most common poison used is Two-Step aka Temek containing Aldicarb agricultural poison, sold under strictly controlled conditions. However sold completely without control is CURATARE. Local township traders in Parys often sell Temek without any registration however, contributing to the poisoning epidemic, this article notes. Many animals other than dogs are suffering horrific deaths after ingesting this poison warns Prof Botha of the Toxicology and Pharmacology Department, Onderstepoort veterinary research institute. Usually criminal gangs are behind these 'two-step' poisonings of guard-dogs and in most cases a poisoned dogs means that a crime-gang is watching one's home and observing the occupants' daily routines to establish when it would be the best time to attack the family while they are inside their home and the least alert. Often families are attacked while watching TV together, tied up, brutalised until they reveal their pin-codes and give the keys to any safes they may have. Usually only guns and cellphones are taken - cellphones usually are found discarded outside after such an attack on a family but they are taken to stop families from raising alarms.http://www.boerentrepreneur.com/farmitracker/reports/view/2645
